Melissa Joan Hart is a Hand-Me-Downer, Are You?
Alert to all broke parents out there – hand-me-downs just became tres chic.
The habit of weeding out our kids’ closets and kicking the goods to our friends got a stamp of approval from Melissa Joan Hart this week as the former teenage witch pulled out her Orbit stroller and two moses baskets to put up for a charity auction.
OK, OK, celeb being fab donates used stuff to charity. Blah, blah, blah. But it’s the interview with MJH that earns her the real mom cred.
Guess what – she not only got a bunch of hand-me-downs from her BFF for her first son, but gave them a way and had them recycled back for her second little boy. Now that’s, well, what the rest of us do, right?
I have been pretty open about being a one and done mom, so most of my daughter’s stuff went right out the door and on to my friend who has a daughter two years younger than my own. I haven’t had a reason to ask for most things back, but I’m always impressed when I learn that something sent my way is on its fourth or sometimes fifth kid (with a huge family, I have dressed my daughter in unisex wear that was once worn by my now-sixteen-year-old twin cousins, their little brother, a girl cousin and another boy cousin before finally making its way into my house).
I’m never sure what it says about the product (usually clothing) in question that it can survive that many kids. That they’re charging too much for something one kid can’t possibly get the money’s worth out of? That the first person did a good job of picking quality? Perhaps the toys are even more amazing – especially those still on their original batteries (Lawd help us).
Do you hand-me-down to this degree or do most of your kids things have enough life for just one or two children before they go kaput?
The auction, by the way, opened over at handmedowns.com yesterday and will run through Aug. 5.
