Morning News: New Jersey Corruption…and County Fairs
Let’s kick this off with some good news –the Dow topped 9,000 yesterday, amid reports of higher home sales.
Three mayors, two state legislators, several rabbis (!!) and 40 other people were arrested in New Jersey in a wide ranging corruption probe. The probe started out as an investigation into a ring dealing in black-market kidneys and fake Gucci handbags (doesn’t seem like those two things should go together, does it?). Unbelievable –but as a resident of Detroit, can I just say thank you to our neighbors to the east for making our whackadoodle politicians look relatively tame by comparison?
Interesting article in TIME: near the end of the Bush Administration, Bush and Cheney were apparently fighting because Cheney wanted Bush to pardon Scooter Libby and Bush wouldn’t do it. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the interactions during that administration.
Finally: Even with the economy tanking, the county fairs across the country are still doing really well. People can’t afford a vacation or dinners out, but they’re splurging on deep-fried cheesecake on a stick. I live walking distance from the state fairgrounds here, and I’ve gotta tell you, I can understand that. The corny, tacky atmosphere of the fair is just good for the soul.
