5 Tips for Better Baby Pics
If you’re looking to improve the pictures you take of your kids, check out this Q&A in the New York Times’s Gadgetwise blog. They talked to professional photographer Carrie Sandoval about taking pictures of newborns and young children and how to get better pictures.
She’s got some technical stuff for the more advanced — you know, people who actually read their camera’s users manual. But she’s got great ideas for point-and-shooters, too.
What’s one thing you can do right away to get a better shot?
1. Get rid of the props. Or if you must, keep it simple, she says, and neutral: baskets, bowls, slings, vintage prams (I’ve been wondering what I could do with all those vintage prams in the garage!).
2. For outdoor shots, she recommends snug-fitting, solid clothes. In fact, her mission appears to be getting rid of anything that might upstage the kid. She also likes a nice, fat, naked baby, so get rid of the clothes when you can.
3. For point-and-shooters, she says turn off the flash and prop the baby near a bright — but not too bright — window.
4. If you can, shoot in the morning when kids are happier.
5. For sibling shots, put the big kid in a bean bag and set the baby on his lap. Ask the big kid to hug the baby.
For angles, composition and other ideas, check out more of her work.
Sandoval has got it down for baby pics, but what about bigger kids and, especially, crazy wild toddlers? Any tips on how to take more than one picture without the subject demanding to see it on the little screen? Seriously — no screen is the one advantage of film cameras.
