Morning News – Space Shuttle Endeavor Grounded
Turns out eratic weather patterns aren’t only annoying to us. NASA was forced to delay the launch of the shuttle Endeavor AGAIN. This time it was lightning. They’ll try again today.
The New York Times is reporting that former Vice-President Dick Cheney ordered the CIA to withhold “information about a secret counterterrorism program from Congress for eight years.” (Is that bad? That sounds kind of bad.) Senator Dianne Feinstein says that the Bush administration broke the law if this is true. But they kept us SAFE. So that makes it OKAY. Right?
Sonia Sotomayor starts her confirmation hearings this week. Howard Fineman of Newsweek says that she’s a “shoo-in” if she “keeps her cool and her answers learnedly vague“. She should probably avoid the phrase “high tech lynching” if the going gets tough. That would seem like obvious race-baiting. No judge who used that phrase during their confirmation hearing would ever be confirmed. Oh wait…
Doesn’t Biden look young in this video? How time flies.
Sarah Palin says she’s willing to campaign for “conservative Democrats who share her values.” What values are those? “Limited government, strong defense and energy independence,” according to ABC News. (The value of “quitting your job” was not mentioned.) Palin told the Washington Times: “I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation. People are so tired of the partisan stuff — even my own son is not a Republican.” Huh? Palin’s son, Track, 20, is registered as “non-partisan.” I didn’t know you could register that way. Isn’t that like being a socialist or something?
Police have made an arrest in the case of the Florida couple who was killed. Byrd and Melanie Billings had adopted many special-needs children, who are now living with relatives. The arrest of Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Sr. was for evidence tampering. The local sherriff calls the case a “humdinger”. Indeed.
“Brüno” didn’t do as well at the box office as some had hoped. Personally, I think its the umlaut. Freaks people out. That, and people didn’t seem to like it as much as they did “Borat”. (I personally thought “Borat” was over-rated. But nobody asked me. As usual.) Rounding out the top 5 were “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” ($28.5M, $120.6M cume), “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” ($24.2M, $339.2M cume – WOW), “Public Enemies” ($14.1M, $66.5M cume – it’ll be gone by next week), and “The Proposal” ($10.5M, $113.8M cume). “The Hangover” was number 6, taking in another $9.9M for a total of $222.4M, which is pretty good for a movie that cost about 12 dollars. “Star Trek” is down at number 12 with just over a million in weekly sales, but the total is at $251.9M, which is enough for a sequel. (Yay.)
Finally, here is Shaquille O’Neal’s tribute to Michael Jackson. I will steal a bit from The Daily Show and call this Your Moment of Zen.
