Miley Cyrus’ Elle Shoot: Over the Top Or Get Over It?

mileycyrusinelle 300x177 Miley Cyrus Elle Shoot: Over the Top Or Get Over It?Another set of Miley Cyrus photos. Another scandal. But is the teen queen’s new photo shoot in Elle Magazine really too racy for teens?

A post over at Buzzfeed this week challenged Hannah Montana’s alter ego for “showing cleavage, wearing hooker boots (?) and posing questionably on tables.” The comments followed from folks joking that she may well turn out to BE a hooker if she continues dressing like that.

Let’s step back a minute and ignore the Vanity Fair brouhaha of 2008. She was nekkid then, and it was gross for a 15-year-old. Now she’s 16 and fully clothed . . . and still no one’s satisfied? Because she’s wearing high-heeled boots and has boobs?

A little perspective here. Have you gone to a concert and seen what most of the teen girls are wearing? Thigh-high boots, which may be the most uncomfortable things on the planet in my shlubby mom-garbed opinion, are everywhere. Ditto a little bit of cleavage - thanks to summery tank tops. As for lying on tables . . . have you seen teenage PDAs lately? Actually, I take that back . . . have you seen teenage PDAs ever? At 16, I was sitting on my boyfriend’s lap, cuddling up against him, kissing him, hugging him . . . doing anything and everything we could get away with in public.

The tagline on the front cover of Elle says Miley’s talking about dad, boyfriends and why she’s not a kid anymore. Which seems to be the big issue with child stars - no one wants to let them grow up. Among the comments on the Buzzfeed article are reminders that Disney is going to drop her if she gets too grown up.

But doesn’t she have to move past the Disney era at some point? She’s 16, and the cutesy going to school, living a double tween life thing is not going to work for her much longer. Why? Because she’s not a tween anymore. She’s a teenager, two years from adulthood. Two long years, but still, two crucial years when kids really begin to let go of childhood preferences and fashion their adult skin.

It’s a time when they try out unfortunate wardrobe choices and begin testing sexual limits, including how MUCH to show in public. Only most kids do it in their hometowns with only their parents, family and friends watching. Miley Cyrus is doing it with the world watching.

And like it or not, she’s still going to grow up.

To quote my Mom: “If everyone was to jump off a bridge, would you follow?”
Cleavage, suggestive poses, and hooker boots are not appropriate for the age, don’t care whether its Jane Q. Public or a celeb teen in question.
Wasn’t Lindsay Lohan a cute Disney teen? Wasn’t Britney one?

PlumbLucky commented on Jul 10 09 at 12:29 pm

What I wanna know is why grown women (the ones who presumably *should* be reading Elle) would want to read about Miley Cyrus? Is Elle for teenagers? I know I read it when I was a teen, but now, looking back, I don’t think it’s really appropriate…and wonder is it marketed to teens, actually? I think it is supposed to be for women.

GP commented on Jul 10 09 at 12:44 pm

Wait, what? teens are wearing thigh-high boots? Those things are expensive, which means that parents are opening their wallets and saying, “Sure, honey, dress up like a hooker, that’s fine.” Who the heck are these people, and what are they doing on my planet?

I have no issue with Miley, though - it’s not like teen stars skanking it up is exactly new here.

Bunny commented on Jul 10 09 at 1:13 pm

Wow, those thigh high boots and are off the charts! What a great outfit!!! She looks classy and sexy at the same time. That outfit is a big win.

Kirk commented on Jul 10 09 at 1:44 pm

I think the only reason why Miley is so controversial is that she’s plastered all over toddler clothing. If teens were the only ones idolizing her, nobody would care. However, teens are not idolizing her - little girls are. Nobody wants there 5 year old to aspire to that.

Marj commented on Jul 10 09 at 2:07 pm

Um, Tyra Banks and Kimora Lee Simmons were both 13 when they began their modeling careers. I assure you they weren’t dressed up like little girls, they were dressed as adult women. This was a fashion shoot. Take a look in Vogue, look at the poses. These are comparable to what Miley Cyrus was doing. It’s not her in a bikini on the cover of Sports Illustrated.. and for God’s sake, she’s 16. Let the girl grow up.

Sweetpea commented on Jul 10 09 at 3:35 pm

Were TB and KLS marketed to kindergarteners? (And still, I think that even if she’s a professional model, it isn’t appropriate for her age.)

PlumbLucky commented on Jul 10 09 at 4:33 pm

PlumbLucky, are any kindergarteners going to be reading this magazine? These pictures are just your usual fashion photos. And I am quite sure she has her fair share of adult fans. And I do not see what is so horribly sexual.

Shana commented on Jul 10 09 at 4:48 pm

I don’t even like Miley Cyrus, and I gotta admit, those boots are hot and she looks hot in them. Let it go, people. She’s 16 — it’s a sexual age. And those boots are way too expensive to be worn by hookers anyhow. Basically — what Sweetpea said. This is a fashion shoot; it’s about the clothes, not the girl. And the clothes happen to be amazing. As for toddlers idolizing her, well, that’s a problem hooker boots or not. Kids should idolize people they know, not celebrities and tv characters.

MDub commented on Jul 10 09 at 4:57 pm

She looks hot and is well-protected. Not every underage girl is so well-protected. I think with the problems of predators and girls being kidnapped for prostitution, this is probably not the best kind of photo. Can’t they find a 22-year-old this hot to pose like this?

GP commented on Jul 10 09 at 5:31 pm

I’ve been to many a middle school dance, either as a middle schooler or a chaperone and watched a girl walk in to the girl’s bathroom looking all cute and innocent. Fifteen minutes later, same girl emerges looking like Xtina in the “Dirty” video. Miley seems to be a grounded kid. Not perfect, but grounded. Jeanne is right, what were we doing as teens back in the day. Granted, I didn’t get away with wearing that outfit, but I did my fair share of keeping stuff away from my parents and acting out. And if your toddler is wearing a Hannah Montana shirt, um, why???

Sheri commented on Jul 10 09 at 10:58 pm

:: And if your toddler is wearing a Hannah Montana shirt, um, why??? ::

Because Disney’s licensing Hannah Montana toddler wear and making a fortune doing it! America buys it by the truckload.

Right now I’m in a job where the target market is tweens & teens and it’s really difficult sometimes to find the happy medium between what’s “appropriate” and what the kids themselves actually want. They know what they like and it isn’t necessarily what Mom & Dad might find ideal. Miley’s music & Disney persona is too lame for 16 year olds, but an Elle fashion shoot certainly might recapture some of the audience who’ve outgrown her. She seems like a nice kid and I hope she’s able to weather a long career in a tough business. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this picture at all. This is MILEY, not Hannah Montana. She’s old enough to breed; get over it!

Rox1SMF commented on Jul 11 09 at 1:08 am

It’s really no wonder young girls are being victimized by older men when women like those who post here are no nonchalant about them dressing like call girls. I am all for recognizing teenage sexuality, but it should be in such a way that fosters exploration between peers, not in a way that makes it appear they are serving themselves up to grown men. But, I guess when so many moms can’t even be bothered to raise their own babies and toddlers, how can they be expected to be there appropriately for their teenage daughters.

GP commented on Jul 11 09 at 8:30 am

I think the nude pics are more appropriate than this one shown here!

GP commented on Jul 11 09 at 8:31 am

I probably should not comment because I don’t have a daughter and don’t have to deal with things like this. However, I do remember, in our day, Madonna was the idol of many girls. She was not underage, but she sure influenced how a lot of us dressed. (Bare midriff, see-through shirts, etc.) I think every generation has something like this.

GP - I have a question about your comment “I think with the problems of predators and girls being kidnapped for prostitution, this is probably not the best kind of photo.” Is this really a problem our society is having? I have always heard that this is way overblown by the media. Not that it never, ever happens, but is such a rarity.

Cali Mom commented on Jul 11 09 at 2:54 pm

You can decide if its overblown or not.

I say, why would a woman with a daughter encourage/support this sort of thing? I remember I wanted to wear a handcuff belt in the mid 80s, not knowing it was an S&M accoutrement. My dad flat out forbade me and didn’t explain. I kind of wish he had explained. I would have been so freaked out I would not have want to wear the belt at that point. Point is, parents have to impose on their kids to some extent. Minors shouldn’t be parading around in adult sexual garb. There are healthy and appropriate ways they can express themselves that leave a little more to the imagination and are still fun and attractive.

GP commented on Jul 11 09 at 3:30 pm

Miley is sexy

Haters are jealous

shasha commented on Jul 11 09 at 7:41 pm

I think I am pretty close to banning Hannah Montana in our house. Between her way-too-old ex-boyfriend and her nasty photos I am a little sick that my girls do like her. My 8 year old and 5 year old like her shows, her music and her clothing lines.
I think her parents are out of their minds for allowing her to do the things she does. Why can’t our society have and embrace a young lady that can be a good role model and dress decently. I would be behind that 100%.

Twyla commented on Jul 11 09 at 9:37 pm

Shut up you haters
You are just jealous

shasha commented on Jul 11 09 at 10:29 pm

Does your mom know you’re on the computer, shasha? Shouldn’t you be baiting some 33 year old pedophile right about now?

GP commented on Jul 11 09 at 10:56 pm

You know yes she is pretty for her age,Still pretty or not its still the parents job to set rules on clothing.

wayno513 commented on Jul 12 09 at 1:56 am

Wow! Toddlers and 5 year olds actually read Elle? Miley is one of the hottest celebrities right now so naturally fashionistas are gonna want her sporting their gear. She’s not naked, nor in a bikini, but fully clothed. And there are those that try to put down her parents. Hey you other parents…why are YOU letting your preteen and toddler kids read Elle in the first place? If it wasnt Miley, then they’d be looking at some 20-something-year-old model wear the same clothes and posing the same way and your daughters might STILL want to immitate that. So what if it’s Miley or some other model? Give your kids Highlights magazine, not Elle, you dummies!!

Scuba20 commented on Jul 12 09 at 2:33 am

They may not read Elle, but I sure wouldn’t have it in my house out and about if I had a five year old, either. Its hard enough to raise a child without having to worry about what their “role models” and “idols” are doing to market themselves. And I’m not sure a five year old would try to emulate a random 22 year old dressed like this…but “its Hannah Montana Mom”. I’m really pretty glad my child’s favorite right now is Tigger…

PlumbLucky commented on Jul 12 09 at 9:29 am

i’m not a hater i just think it’s innapropriate but it’s her life

mya commented on Jul 12 09 at 11:01 am

This and other pictures from the photo shoot are just sad to me. Not necessarily because she is being “too sexy” but, because she really looks to me like a little girl playing dress up. It’s painfully obvious that she or the photographer want to portray her(self) as a confident adult while if you look at her facial expression, she is just a baby trying to prove she is a “big girl”. I look at pictures of myself as a teenager, dressed up and thinking I was the hottest thing out there and now I’m just embarrassed by them. Most teenagers think they know everything about life at 16 and only realize how young and silly they were later on. I think these pictures are truly laughable and I hope that in 10 years Miley will be laughing too.

Laura L. commented on Jul 12 09 at 1:21 pm

I know I am going way off-topic here, but this is why one of my favorite TV shows was Gilmore Girls. The teenage daughter was intellectual, didn’t like to party, didn’t drink, smoke, and waited until college to have sex. She also had a great relationship with her mother and was polite to everyone around her, without being a pushover. She was a total nerd, without all the negative connotations of being a nerd. (A beautiful nerd, but still.) She had her occasional issues, but she worked through them. I can’t think of another image of a teenage girl in the media that comes close to this. Most are closer to Miley.

anon commented on Jul 12 09 at 7:22 pm

I will have to watch re-runs. That’s exactly what I am hoping for my daughter! Maybe with a little athleticism thrown in for balance.

GP commented on Jul 12 09 at 8:03 pm

This is ridiculous. Actually over the weekend, I met two of her adult fans. Apparently her music is categorized as Adult Contemporary. Who knew? Anyhow, all of you complaining that you would have preferred if Elle used some twenty year old model for the photo shoot should know that a vast majority of the time you see a model in a magazine she is somewhere between the age of fifteen and nineteen.
All of you seem to be looking for something to fear or just be outraged over. And GP, you really think that the existence of Miley Cyrus photos is what gets pedophiles into a tizzy? If anything, she is definitely not their type! Pedophiles are into little kids, not girls that can actually legally marry in many states.
Cyrus is a pretty girl that also has musical talent (not my taste personally) and from interviews I have heard with her she seems to have her head on straight. And hey, I can say as someone that remembers picking up Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, Vogue and many other fashion magazine along the same lines when I was in sixth grade, your kids will turn out fine! It is sad that so many of you seem to think that just some photo shoots here or there are going to turn your kids into vapid slut teens. It does not work like that. Stop watching movies like Thirteen and Kids and try to remember when you were that age rather than bothering with all the silly hysteria.

Shana commented on Jul 13 09 at 10:11 am

oh my god! really, it’s so stupid i know girls much much younger then her that wear Nothing!!!
she’s 16 every single girl i know shows a bit of cleavage here and there and wears heels, really.
ergh!

Gaia commented on Jul 13 09 at 12:02 pm

I’m sorry, but she looks like slut. Not her fault probably, but the bagazine editor. Who in their right mind take 16 y.o. kid, dress her up like a slut and put on the cover?

Whoc commented on Jul 13 09 at 9:31 pm

Im sorry but I had to post. Im 16 and I find in no way this being racey or encouraging young girls to dress like this because its a FASHION MAGAZINE. Unless 12 year olds have a humongus liking for Elle Im pretty sure your daughters will not be wearing hooker boots anytime soon. Its how you idolize her that makes the influence. When I idolized Destiny’s Child at 7 my parents were pretty clear on not letting me wear any of the outfits they were wearing. And have we forgotten that she is a person like everyone else! I personaly think she’s a better role model than the average teenage girl. I liked some of the clothes in the photo shoot!

Tay commented on Jul 14 09 at 1:02 am

Are you serious people? My god she doesn’t even look racey. This is Elle Magazine and Elle Magazine talks about some pretty weird things. This isn’t nearly as bad as the Vanity Fair Photo shoot. I’m pretty sure little girls aren’t gonna look at this photo and say, “I want hooker boots!” I mean come on! Get real people. Miley Cyrus is a way better role model than others.

Drew commented on Jul 14 09 at 6:12 pm

get over it. miley cyrus has done so many slutty/over the top things, i don’t think people should even say anything anymore. this chick just never learns….

maddie commented on Jul 18 09 at 10:30 pm

excuse me, but when you say “no one wants to let them[child stars] grow up”, are you serious? If anything, stars like jamie lynn spears and michael Jackson (remembr him?) grew up way to fast, even for their own liking. they had the fame, they had the money, and like little kids, they abused their freedom and messed up their lives (yes having a kid at 16 constitutes messing up). I don’t think there’s anything wrong with miley wanting to dress immodestly and have sex with her bf, but then let’s stop flaunting her as the moral barometer of our teen daughters.

Jae commented on Jul 31 09 at 4:21 pm

Miley is expressing her sexuality and her transition from childhood to adulthhood in a tasteful way, and she has every right to do this. It’s not porn or a sex tape.By doing this, I think she’s setting a good example. Freedom of expression applies to teens, too.

mimipower commented on Aug 31 09 at 3:44 pm

Ok, there are lots of good points being made here on both sides. I, however think we are all missing a far more subtle and worrying motivation behind this. I am a feminist and have lived a lot, and traveled the world so reckon I have seen both good and bad. I see what I would call the sexualisation of our kids and teens has been subtly on the increase for the past decade.
Our media world is so easily accessible, we live in a covet driven world in the west, buying and hankering after something bigger and better all he time(bigger car, larger house, designer clothes, etc). We to a point seem to be driven by what society and it’s so called culture prescribes to us as ‘beautiful and sucessful’, we seem to equate looking a certain way with how sucessful, popular, even loved we are. This can be seen clearly through the notion of advertising, we are sold an idea or a concept tapping into our innate physchological fears or desires which is a lot more powerful than we wish to admit.
I was a teen not ‘That’ long ago and was no angel but there is no way I would have been allowed out looking like that,’Hanna montana’ , Of course you change your clothes with you friends and hide things behind your parents back this is just part and parcel of being a teenager ! But what we must not lose sight of is that at this age we are extremely impressionable, mallable and influenced by our peers and popular culture. We as adults have to be the leaders, educate our young girls and young women that they should aspire to be more than another boob job statistic , the wannabe celeb or the next line up on famestreet in L.A all of which seems to be the be all and end all for many nowadays.
It is all subtly driven by the media, the internet ,the fashion mags and FHMs and nuts etc which has seen pornography and the ilk more mainstream and popular.
What we do not know is that the man driven industry rules which apply to the porn industry influencing and to a large extent driving the media, fashion trends(how mainstream now is it to have a boob job?!), entertainment and so many other sections of our society now more than ever !
Wake up and smell the coffee people. Kids/teens will be influenced and rebel , we all did and it is not our individuality or creativity that should be stemmed, but our kids , teens , young boys and women should be sent the correct “Messages ” via the many modes of media available to us today!
What message is sent or received when we see certain images? today more than ever before our kids are being overtly sexualised…kids should be kids and remain so as long as possible , they have their whole lives to be adults, this should be upheld and respected by all sections of our society. What message is it sending to our teen girls/boys? different subliminal messages being sent / received here. The U.S.A is the most liberal country in the world , yet it is the worst and most unhealthy when it comes to values and equality and corruption.
This is not about how lovely or awful she ‘miley ‘ looks, of course she looks good and pretty and all the rest, unfortunately in this society it will be viewed in a sexual light , we must strive to protect our values and kids and young women. Looks do not equal sucess or popularity, nor will it determine your happiness or wellbeing these are the messages that should pervade our society , instead the opposite is the case. As the james brown song goes ” this is a mans mans world, but it wouldn’t be anything without a woman or a girl.”
The human body is a beautiful thing , we should honour it , celebrate it not with the whole wide world showing it to all and sundry, it is not necessary, for some sadly their ego believes it makes them more confident because of the attention they receive, but what type of attention should be the point and peoples motivations why they dress a certain way . Kids learn what they see from the world and environment around them. America land of dreams, I fear for you all. It’s a man’s world, an unjust world, women need to be respected, to be inspired, to be confident and know their worth, not objectified and confused in our modern times. And men need to be reconditioned that women are not objects there simply for their pleasure to ogle and disrespect whenever they feel like it , the knock on side effects for society are far too awful if this downward spiral is not soon curbed for the next generation.

Love to all,

Missconception.
