Time Writer Makes Fun of Wife for Eating Her Placenta

yikes
If you’re a reader of this blog, you’re likely familiar with placentophagy…you know, the art of placenta consumption. Apparently the practice is brand new to Time writer Joel Stein who spent an entire article mocking his wife for wanting to consume her own placenta (with herbs!) for its many benefits.
“when Cassandra told me that for $275, a woman would come to our house, cook Cassandra’s placenta, freeze-dry it and turn it into capsules to help ward off postpartum depression and increase milk supply, I said, “$275 is a bargain compared with the $20,000 I’ll have to spend to tear out our kitchen immediately afterward.”
Joel is clearly not impressed. To be fair, many of us find the whole “Placenta: it’s the other white meat” a tad bizarre, stomach-churning, etc. And, yeah, Stein gets a few funny lines in.
However; some readers might take umbrage to certain bon mots like,
“when Cassandra’s looks fade in her 50s, there’s no way I’m putting up with this crap.”
Har Har?
What do you think? Is placentophagy fair game for full-press mockery or did this guy just make a laughing stock of his wife in a major new publication?
Oh and here is a bizarre video entitled “Placenta.” Please to enjoy.

GP commented on Jul 07 09 at 1:02 pmHe also wrote a (very funny) piece about his son’s circumcision. Man’s gotta provide for his family. I bet they have an understanding. I think he did it in an endearing way. I’m pretty crunchy, but I buried mine in the yard and would not eat it…sorry
Cali Mom commented on Jul 07 09 at 3:21 pmIf you read his whole article, it seems much more funny and less insulting. Since this is his style of writing, and he is still married, you have to assume his wife is OK with this.
Oh, and I have to admit that, although I am a semi-regular babble reader, this is the first time I have heard of someone eating their own placenta.
Cali Mom commented on Jul 07 09 at 3:23 pmGP – oh yeah, I remember that article about his son’s circumcision. It was really funny. One great thing in reading these is to show how people do not fit into pre-defined molds. (His wife wanted to eat her placenta, which might indicate she is very crunchy, but still insisted that their son be circumcised.)
Marj commented on Jul 07 09 at 7:15 pmTo be honest, I read the article and thought it was very good. A little humor over something that he was obviously not comfortable with. However, he was VERY supportive of her decision, even meeting with the “placenta lady” for his wife.

Anna commented on Mar 30 10 at 3:38 pmComments Some of my friends have this kind of sense of humor, and I get it. I am a “placenta lady” and when my husband gave me this article to read (after coming across it in his research on placentophagia for an article he is writing), I laughed out loud. It is my assumption that this mainstream guy was using humor to introduce and explore a topic that is funny and absurd to most upon introduction, but one he has come to value. -anna from placentagirls
