Morning News - Transformers Movie Still On Top
I will talk about the weekend box office, and also Sarah Palin’s weekend announcement. (Nothing about Al Franken today. Maybe tomorrow.) But first a couple of other items.
First, breaking news: the AP is reporting that Robert McNamara has died. McNamara was Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. He was 93.
A little early controversy surrounding the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. No, they didn’t remove curling from the list of events. The B.C. Civil Liberties Association is concerned about free speech being stifled while the games are in town. Nothing has happened yet, so there’s time to fix whatever the problem is. If there is one.
Marion Barry was arrested again. I’m surprised it took this long. The dude has more issues than Time magazine.
Now. The big story over the weekend was Sarah Palin stepping down as Governor. Reactions seem to be mixed, trending towards negative.
Here’s an AP video of Alaskans reacting to the news:
Conservative leaders aren’t offering a lot of kind words for Sarah Barracuda. CNN tells us that Karl Rove isn’t sure if stepping down was a good move for the Alaska Gov, and also that “George Will says Palin is declaring herself a quitter.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement for someone who wants to run for President in 2012. Maybe. The left-leaning Daily Kos thinks that Palin may try to run as a third-party candidate. Vice-President Joe Biden says that Palin isn’t a “victim”, which I tend to agree with. And The Daily News quotes Mike Huckabee as saying that her stepping down “raises more questions that it answers.” But my question, and I think it’s a fair one, is just what she was talking about in her resignation speech. Here it is, in full (I think). I’m actually trying to be fair here. I’m not making fun of her. I honestly don’t know what she was talking about. (Full disclosure: I didn’t watch the entire speech. It’s very long.) If anyone knows, tell me. Seriously.
Of course, even without watching the video, all one needs to do is look at the ad that appears next to the AP video.
Very subtle.
Sarah Palin resigns, Part I
Sarah Palin resigns, Part II
In other July 4 news, Joey Chestnut won the hot dog eating contest at Coney Island. Can we stop calling “competitive eating” a sport? Please? Here’s some video of the eating, which is safe for work but somewhat nauseating.
And finally, our top story (ha!). “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (aka “Transformers 2″) continued to sell an amazing amount of tickets, especially considering how bad the reviews were. “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” (aka “Ice Age 3″ — what happened to sequels with numbers?) got better reviews (including mine, which you can read here) and sold as many tickets as “TRF” (get it? I took the first letters of the… oh, never mind), which means that the two flicks were basically tied for first place as of this writing. I think “Ice Age” is probably a lot more kid friendly than “Transformers”, although I haven’t seen the latter film. But something tells me I’m right.
