Free Family Events in NYC
At a loss for something to do with the kids? How about something for free?
Yes, free. Even in the Big Apple, where money flows from your pocket like water through your ceiling when your upstairs neighbor leaves the sink after skipping town for the weekend (not that anything like that ever happened to me – nooo) there are a multitude of free things to do, some with your kids, some without.
Time Out New York has a big list of summer fun, all free. Some highlights:
Free Outdoor Movies: Central Park, Bryant Park, Riverside Park, and some locations that don’t have “Park” in their name. Film titles range from “Goldfinger” to “The Muppet Movie” to the more recent “Tropic Thunder.” (The latter you may want to leave the kids at home for, but it’s up to you.) Sadly, there is no free showing of “Free Willy.” Maybe next year.
Free Theater: You that thing actors do? On a stage? I think it’s called… a play? Or if they sing, maybe a… oh, what’s the word… oh! Musical! That’s it. There is an abundance of free outdoor theater happening in New York during the summer. If you don’t want to wait on line all day for Shakespeare in the Park, go downtown aways to check out Shakespeare in the Parking Lot. You won’t see Anne Hathaway, but you might see someone that will be as famous as she is now in a few years.
Free Music: There’s pop, there’s classical, there’s Loudon Wainwright III. What more do you want?
For a list of many, many free things to do in New York, check out Time Out New York’s website.
