Mickey Mouse Takes to the Skies
Next time you take your kids outside at night, you can help them find Mickey. A Scottish schoolgirl participating in a contest in honor of the International Year of Astronomy has named a new constellation.
As it’s not officially Disney-ized, the mouse’s common name is “Wee Sleekit Beast” (remember, it was Scotland).
This year marks the four hundredth anniversary of Galileo’s invention of the telescope, and kids throughout Scotland were linked to an important astronomy site to celebrate. Directed to choose a star whose distance (in lightyears) away from the earth corresponded with the age of the site, the kids then mapped out constellations around them.
Technically, Wee Sleekit Beastie is not an official constellation, but the Royal Astronomy Society, which sponsored the contest, has listed it on the official Website of the International Year of Astronomy so your family can try picking it out too.
