“Hurricane Ike” Baby Comes After 13 Years of Infertility
Now this is a story that will make you happy unless you’re dead inside: Out of hundreds of “Hurricane Ike babies” born in Texas, one little girl is extra special to her family. See, little Bella Elizabeth Puente was born to her parents after 13 years of infertility.
She joins sister Naomi, who the Puentes adopted after years of trying to get pregnant. Soon after they decided to try adoption, they got a call that a little girl needed a home. That girl was Naomi, and the little family settled in to life together. But a short time ago, Naomi, now six years old, started praying at night for “a baby brother, a baby sister, or a dog.”
So her parents started looking into adopting again and tried to see a fertility doctor. Unfortunately, their first appointment was delayed by Hurricane Gustav, and the second by Hurricane Ike.
They lost almost everything in Ike, and after coming home from their evacuation to Louisiana, lived in a travel trailer outside their apartment complex while family and friends helped them rebuild their lives. Mom Christina and dad Jesus were back to work and trying to make life as normal as possible. But Christina started feeling really exhausted. Going to bed early didn’t help, and finally someone suggested taking a pregnancy test.
Like any good infertile, she took three. All of them were positive, and June 25, Bella was born healthy and perfect.
This quote from Christina just killed me: “The only way I can explain it to someone who hasn’t gone through infertility is, I have always been a mother, just a childless mother. It’s just years of disappointment.”
She’s right – and I am so glad she’s been able to mother two little girls.
