Green Acres, the Munsters and Little Kids
Sick of cartoons and the alphabet song? Grab your remote control and flip over to TVLand! Peter Hartlaub at the Poop revealed his son’s got a thing for old TV this week, and I’m kicking it nostalgia time.
Because we didn’t have TV in our house growing up, we had what my dad liked to jokingly refer to as “VCR-vision.” And the only movies my little brother and I were allowed to watch? Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.
Yes, that folks, is to blame for everything you read here on Strollerderby (with my name on it anyway) that makes you go “huh?” Thank you, don’t forget to tip your waitstaff.
The silliest part of all of this? My show tune-loving gay best friend recently pointed out that my brother truly does not fit into any stereotype: for a little boy growing up loving show tunes, his absolute favorite was “Nothing Like a Dame” from South Pacific. Yes, his path was written in the stars.
OK, seriously folks, the musicals were the best bet for us frankly because they were clean. There was no sex (not onscreen - although looking back on the serious hotness between Laurie and Curly in Oklahoma . . . wowza), no cursing and the violence was more “let’s step outside” then “I’ve fashioned a shank out of my spoon, and I’m going to gouge out your eyeballs.”
To be fair, I haven’t seen the latter on Dora. But if they get hold of the remote and land on a Law and Order rerun, watch out. Which is why The Munsters and Leave it to Beaver suddenly sound pretty good right now.
Hartlaub said he’s kind of confused by the reasoning behind his kid’s obession with Emergency!, that old seventies drama, but he figures there are worse things the kid could watch.
