Morning News: Celebrity Deaths, and Some Other Stuff
If my Facebook feed is any indication, the biggest news of today (as I write this Thursday night) is the unexpected death of Michael Jackson, and the expected, if sad, death of Farrah Fawcett. I was surprised by the news of Michael Jackson’s death, but not shocked. His was a sad life, although much of his tragedy was brought on himself. And there’s the pedophile allegations. True or not, what he did admit to was damn creepy – sleepovers with little boys and so on. I know he was broke, but I am hoping he’d set aside at least something for his own children’s care.
As for Farrah Fawcett – I mostly remember my mother going apoplectic over the sexpot nature of her 1970s persona and never ever letting me watch “Charlie’s Angels.” Unlike a lot of women who get fawned over for their looks, though, and never learn to develop other aspects of themselves, she became a well-respected dramatic actress. And she handled her illness with grace, allowing cameras to follow her while she pursued her treatment with the hopes of inspiring other cancer patients.
Oooookay, back to more important news now (like anyone’s going to be doing much of anything tomorrow but making inappropriate jokes on Facebook and showing the whippersnappers in the office how to moonwalk) – swine flu is still around, and as a matter of fact has infected 1 million people in the US and also spreading fast in the southern hemisphere. A French company is working on a vaccine that hopefully will be ready before fall.
And maybe by then we will all be able to afford to pay for it. I missed the president’s forum on health care, but ABC News has posted a “fact check” article about some of the things he said in the claim. Scary fact of the day: health care costs are rising no three times that rate of wages that Obama claims, but five times.
Whatever –I’ve lost you already, haven’t I? Just go on back to your moonwalking, folks.
