Worst Green Idea Ever Is Bad for Kids Too
It’s time to hand out a bonehead of the month award courtesy of Babble, and I’ve got a big winner for you: the folks filling old soda bottles with cleaning solutions and selling them to families to “go green.”
Anyone else see something incredibly wrong here?
No? OK, let me break it down for you. Car wash concentrate, 409, etc. are BAD for you. And soda bottles look pretty darn appealing to kids (especially kids like mine who have been denied soda by their mean old mommies). Did they not read Alice in Wonderland? Kids see “drink me,” and say “OK, sure.”
Only instead of growing to gargantuan size, they’re going to get sick . . . and maybe die.
So much for an “eco-initiative,” which is what the folks at New Soap, Old Bottles are calling it to try to get your cash (it’s got a child-proof lid, they say . . . so they apparently DID think about kids somewhere along the way . . . even if they haven’t yet met my four-year-old with her mastery of every childproof lid known to man).
By the way, since we’re pissing in their cornflakes, we figure we might as well offer up a better idea. Instead of buying old soda bottles filled with household cleansers to “go green,” buy an economy size and just pour it into your OLD cleaning bottles. It’s greener - less plastic used - not to mention that silly little benefit of, actually LOOKING LIKE what it is.
I know, I know. It won’t have the cachet of a retro old soda bottle . . . and no one will make money off of it.

I ditched most, lock up the rest, and use a lot of vinegar, borax, baking soda, and lemon juice.

Emma VT commented on Jun 24 09 at 3:45 pmI think it is a decent idea and a cute product, and seems to me to be for the young, urban, apartment dweller. It is up to parents to decide whether to bring certain products into their homes and keep their kids safe. I would look at this and know bad idea for my home, with kids, but I wouldn’t bash the company because their product may be just fine for lots of other folks.
Jim Bob commented on Sep 29 09 at 2:01 pmSeriously. You need a life. Someone tries to do something to help our environment, and you bash them, because you refuse to be a parent and watch what your kids do. My children do not drink whatever they want. Even if I am not looking they do not down 409, and mind you I believe most kids (maybe not yours) but most would not drink 409 anyways. It has a rather pungent smell. But if you must trash a company that is doing something to make the worl a better place then go ahead. Oh and by the way, coke bottle have thicker walls than 409 and other cleaning product bottles, plus they are made from a much tougher plastic.
