I’m already freaked out. Tim Burton is currently working on a 3-D adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. I love Alice in Wonderland. I adore the book and have watched the sugarcoated Disney animated version countless times. I’m also a big fan of the surreal take of the tale by Jan Švankmajer. But this new incarnation of the Lewis Carroll classic…it’s looking pretty damn creepy.

Photos of the film – which won’t be out until spring of 2010 – were released and give a sneak peak into the eerie and odd aesthetic that we can expect. To the right, is the Johnny Depp ‘s possessed portrayal of the Mad Hatter and below check out the photos of Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen as well as some shots of the set.

Alice will be played by the ‘unknown’ 19-year old Australian Mia Wasikowska. Although she is being called an ‘unknown’, she’s been working since 2004 and you may recognize her as the trouble Sophie from HBO’s “In Treatment”.

Are you looking forward to a new, creepier, take on Alice in Wonderland? Or would you have liked Tim Burton to have left it alone?

This looks just amazing!!! I also love the one by Svankmajer so I think that this may be right up my ally. Alice in Wonderland is not a light story. I hope that the movie proves to be as complex intellectually as it appears to be aesthetically.

I think it looks creepy & fun. I’m a huge fan of the book. I will admit I didn’t like Burton’s Willy Wonka though. I wanted to like it because I love so much of his stuff, but it just couldn’t compare to the Gene Wilder version and Depp as Willy Wonka/Michael Jackson was a bit scary.

Can’t wait – although 19 sounds a little old for Alice. It’s been awhile (a looong while) since I read it – but wasn’t she closer to the tween years?

Looks awesome, but then, anything with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is bound to be.
