How Much Allowance Should Kids Get?

allowance 150x150 How Much Allowance Should Kids Get?The other day I asked when you thought kids should start getting an allowance, and pointed out that I don’t remember when mine began. I also don’t remember how much I got. (I also don’t remember what I had for lunch. Wait, what were we talking about? Oh yeah.) If I recall correctly, it started with something as small as 25 cents. As I got older, the amount grew.

The stuff that I used to spend my allowance on – candy and comic books – are a lot more expensive than they used to be. Comics cost 60 cents, they’re now three or four dollars apiece. Candy was probably a quarter, with smaller items (Tootsie Rolls, Tootsie Pops… Mmm… Tootsie Pops…) for five or ten cents. In my neighborhood, a regular candy bar or package of Twizzlers costs one dollar.

According to my quickie calculations, comic book prices have risen 500-600% since I was a wee lad. (Well, I was never really “wee” but I was shorter than I am now.) So if I got five dollars back in the day, I would need to give my son twenty-five dollars to keep up with inflation. I’m not doing that.

Admittedly, this logic is incredibly flawed, so much so that to call it “logic” is unfair. “Reasoning”, “rationale” or “strategery” might be better. So what method should I use? Or to put it another way, what method do you use?
