It’s Your Age, Not Your Clothes’ Size

wearyoursize 300x225 Its Your Age, Not Your Clothes SizeWhen I need a laugh, I can usually depend on Passive Aggressive Notes, and this gem is no different.

A dad replaced the labels on his daughter’s pants with “none of your damn business,” to keep a babysitter from repeating that the tot should be wearing “her age” in clothing.

As in, if she’s two years old, she should be wearing a size 2T, at three her little shorts should read 3T and so on. The father’s actions cracked me up, but the babysitter’s just left me mystified.

How many kids do you know who actually “wear their age?” Maybe for a month or two, or maybe one particular piece of clothing on the body but not all. But most kids I know wear a conglomeration of sizes.

Take my own daughter, for example. Her super long torso (thanks Opa) means her shirts may be as much as two sizes above her age at any given moment, although her skinny little arms look like they’re swimming in a tent. Her tiny waist, on the other hand, means we’re either a size BELOW her age or fastening the age-to-size waistbands super-tight (thank goodness for those adjustable bands). Two-piece sets are the bane of my existence as they can NEVER be worn as an actual set (the tops need to be thrown on immediately, the pants will remain in the closet for a good year or so).

And don’t even get me started on shoes. I went out and picked up a set of sandals for summer, and my parents bought her an even larger size figuring she’d need them by summer’s end. . . only to find out that her feet haven’t grown since last year. She’s still wearing the Crocs she wore last August.

With the variety of sizes of kids, it stands to reason that the sizes on the rack are an average more so than a guide. Basically, every kid in America gets to experience what we women have for years - ignore the label. Just put it on and see if it fits.

Do your kids actually “wear their age” or are you in the same boat?

My kids wear their age for about the first six months of that age and then move up a size. They are pretty predictable in size so I buy everything a year ahead for the right season. It has been nice and budget-friendly.

For grins, let me set this one up:
My child is in the 50th percentile for weight; 90th for height. Age is eight months.
Wears?
Onsies - 12 to 18 months, depending on the brand. They’re way too big around, but still.
Pants - 9 month pants fit around, but are high-waters. 12 months are long enough, but they need safety-pinning.
Shorts - 9 months are fine, too little to care about short length.
Shirts - 12 months to get length.
PJ’s - 12 months to get length.

And my child is “only” in the 50th percentile for weight…meaning that if you line up 100 children, he’s right smack in the middle, size-wise. I imagine that if the height and weight percentile matched, he’d be wearing 12 or 18 month clothing. What stupidity on the part of the babysitter. So I have to crack up at the father’s actions…

I dont think my son has ever worn his “age” size clothing.. well ok i lied maybe the first week he was born :)

My daughter is in the 95% for height and weight. She is 19 months and right now is very comfortably in a 3T. She’s a tall drink of water. So, the idea of her wearing her age…we would never get the clothes on her body! I can’t imagine the babysitter has kids of her own!

My son is a week short of six months, and has been in mostly 9-12 or 12-18 clothes for about two weeks now. My MIL buys him Small Wonders clothes from Kmart, and he can still wear his 3-6 stuff there. He grew out of Gerber 3-6 at six weeks old. It really just depends on the brand.

I can understand the weirdness with the babysitter, though. My babysitter is obsessed about my son’s temperature. He’s been teething, and I’ve confirmed with my pediatrician that a fever of 100.3 is okay while teething as long as it breaks when he’s given tylenol. I’ve had my ped even write out a note, but she still calls freaking out about his ‘high fever’ of 100.4 without tylenol while he’s actively cutting a tooth. I’ve started to look for another provider, but I can’t afford to spend much for daycare, and other than her weird fever obsession, she’s great.

Wouldn’t it be easier to just find a different babysitter?

Knitty commented on Jun 15 09 at 3:13 pm

My daughter will be 4 next month and is just now fitting into 3Ts, depending in the brand she can still wear 2Ts. My mother in law insit on this clothes equal age thing also. She always gets mad when the clothes she buys hang up in the closet for a year or more, then insist that we are not feeding her enough. For the record my my daughter eats just fine, but I am barely 5 feet tall and her father is 5′6″. If our daughter where wearing her age she would end up being taller than both of us by the growth charts (man would I have some explaning to do).

“Wouldn’t it be easier to just find a different babysitter?”

Easier, maybe, but not as funny!

My kids pretty much wore their age until they hit 4T. Now they are in sizes 6 and 8–about a size bigger than their ages. The oldest wears a 32 pant and he’s almost 20.

“Easier” - well, maybe, maybe not.

PlumbLucky commented on Jun 16 09 at 8:48 am

There are so many differences in brands’ sizes its not even funny. The age-size relationship probably creates the biggest confusion, though, for new parents…and baby sitters…that may not yet realize that the label doesn’t matter.

And from the other side of things: my 17 month old wears 6 - 12 month in pretty much everything. Looking at the weight estimates on 12 month stuff this weekend, I’m guessing he’ll be in those when he’s about 2.

Em commented on Jun 16 09 at 12:43 pm

My son was in the 95% for his age. I found that he fit in clothes that were twice his age, so at 1 year he was wearing 2T, at 3 years he was into a size 6. Depending on the brand, this was pretty consistent unless an item was 100% cotton (in which case I’d go for a size larger expecting shrinkage). For a babysitter to complain about the size a child was supposed to be in, sounds like he/she got this “tip” from a parent of another kid he/she was also babysitting and took it as the gospel truth.

my 2 year old daughter wears a variety of sizes. my dilemma is that i don’t make my wiggly toddler try on clothes in the store, so it’s a matter of trial and error, buy and return. any tips for that?

jen commented on Jun 16 09 at 2:25 pm

My son is 2 and he wears 12-18 month shorts (the same ones from last year!) and 18-24 month tops. He’s always been behind in size (he was able to wear preemie clothes at birth even though he was full term and 6 1/2 lbs). I buy only brands where I can find the height and weight recommendations by size and then buy the appropriate size. That has been effective at least 90% of the time. Like the other Jen, I have not been able to take him to the store to try things on but that has been the most effective for me.

My lil Girl is small to averge for her age (15 mos) and she wears almost exactly her weight. Right now She is in a 12-18. Sometimes the pants are a little big in the waste but the length is spot on.

ummm…the stupid Lowe’s and Sprint ads make it impossible to read this article! I keep trying to close them but no dice!

M commented on Jun 16 09 at 4:31 pm

Okay, that is funny! I went through something similar myself when my daughter was 2 1/2 yrs. She was wearing several dif. sizes at the time and someone told me I should only buy 24 mos or 2T clothing for her because that was her age! I was mystified as to why anyone would think that way! My little girl is now almost 8 yrs and she is over 4ft tall. The problem is that she is super slim and I can never find pants or shorts that fit her waist. I usually buy the ones with the adjustable waist, but they are still too big. Length wise, she’s an 8 or nine depending on the brand. waist wise, she is a small six. Try having that problem! Her dad is over 6 ft tall and I am only 5 ft tall. She will be taller than me by next yr for sure!

thats funny because my mom was telling me that kids clothes are not actually labeled right and they will always be wearing a siz or two bigger than the age it says. I had bought my daughter a little purple sweat suit to wear home from the hospital and it was in the 3 month range. my fiance’s step mother told me that it would never fit her. So I ended up taking something else that she would hopefully fit into. And wasnt she surprised when big ol’ 9 pounder came home and just barely made it into the outfit. Luckily they lose a little weight at first so we were still able to use it a few times.
As for now, my 20 month old is in 24 month or 2T. She is very tall and i would say she is pretty skinny. though i believe she is in the 75th for both height and weight (or somewhere right around there). She just graduated from 18 months when i put a shirt on and it looked like a little belly shirt!
My cousin’s daughter who is only 6 weeks older is in a 3T, but she was telling me today that her legs are so short when she buys the pants tpo fit her waist she has to roll them up about 4 times so she doesnt step on them.

My boy friend has a just turned 4 year old. we went summer clothes shopping and she is wearing a 7/8, she is very big for her age. My boy friends daughter seen a nutritionist and she is EXTREMLY over weight. I think the age to size should be in at least some sort of range giving an idea of there size, all kids are different. Parents make it ok for there child to be over weight and its not ok.

caprilove commented on Jun 18 09 at 4:30 am

My lil man is near the bottom of the growth chart, but he has always fit into stuff that is his age size. BUT no bigger or they fall/hang off of him, so no buying the next size up to save $, I have to hit it dead on.
