freckles New Melanoma Risk Factors Discovered A melanoma surveillance group has identified six new factors that increase the likelihood of developing skin cancer. None of these factors are surprising, but the risk factors they entail are a bit shocking.

The factors are freckles on the upper back, a family history of skin cancer, outdoor summer jobs as a teen, red or blonde hair, sunburns as a kid that caused patches of scaly skin, and severe childhood sunburns.

Having one of the factors increases the likelihood of developing skin cancer by three times, while people with two or more of the factors are ten times more likely to develop melanoma.

So if you have light-haired kids, you’re probably not going to want them to work construction as teenagers.
