If this is a concern of yours, TheApple.com has a helpful list of suggestions to keep kids learning and exercising what they know over the summer.  In addition to a list of web resources for parents to use at home, there are fun suggestions for painlessly keeping kids thinking when they least expect it.  Some ideas for practicing rote math and spelling skills include:

Roll of the Dice — Roll two dice and say the math facts that go with those two numbers (practice addition, subtraction, or  multiplication)

Facts with a beat — Clap or snap math facts.  Speed up the rhythm as kids get better at their facts.

Memory — Make mini cards of math facts.  Put a fact on one card and the answer on another card.  Lay these face down on the table and take turns finding matches.

Spelling words in play dough — Create each letter of your word out of play dough.

Scrabble — Pick 10 words to spell and use scrabble tiles to build the words.  Add up the value of all the words.

Shaving Cream — Squirt Shaving onto a table, counter, or cookie sheet, smooth it out and write words in the shaving cream.
