Dick Cheney Supports Gay Marriage
So Dick Cheney, the man who spent much of his time in office at an “undisclosed location,” has been everywhere lately. Mostly he’s telling anyone who will listen how much he disagrees with the job that Barack Obama is doing as President. But he also came out (no pun intended) in favor of gay marriage. In his own words: “I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay, and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family…I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish — any kind of arrangement they wish.”
Newsweek points out that this is different from what President Obama’s stated view on the matter, which is that civil unions are fine but gay marriage is a no-no. Cheney does his own bit of trying to have his gay wedding cake and eat it too, saying “The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don’t support. I do believe that, historically, the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue, and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis.” Fox News talking head Shepard Smith actually called Cheney’s “leave it up to the states” statement a “cop-out”.
The problem I have is this. Here’s a quote from a 2004 article in the Hartford Courant: “The emerging Republican Party platform strongly endorses President Bush’s call for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage — despite Vice President Dick Cheney’s contrasting views — and declares that only heterosexual couples should be entitled to legal recognition and related benefits.” You know — something at the FEDERAL LEVEL. The article does point out that Cheney disagreed with this stance, so at least he is being somewhat consistent. But why not speak up then? Will Cheney make these statements in support of gay marriage at the next GOP convention? Clearly this is not a man who has any problem saying what’s on his mind, at least once he is out of office. As a very influential person in the Republican Party, why does he seem to have no power in shaping their position on this issue?

Anything he and his family needs, he’s all for having the gov’t act. If they don’t need it, no one else should want it either. He may be one of this country’s biggest hypocrites.
Shana commented on Jun 04 09 at 10:26 amSeriously? Of course having a gay kid would affect someone’s views on gay marriage. Would you respect him more if he was like the Staten Island senator here in New York that has completely ostracized his sister because she is gay? The man has never been against gay marriage, this is not news. There was a big uproar in the party when his daughter announced she and her partner were having a kid. He obviously loves and respects his daughter as she is.
Cheney’s problems are his views on international issues and the economy not that he is accepting of his daughter and never said anything disparaging about the gay community. Hell, I wish more Republcans and Democrats were accepting of the fact that gays and lesbians deserve to have the same equal rights afforded to heterosexuals.
g8grl commented on Jun 04 09 at 1:12 pmShana, My point was that I don’t give him credit for coming to the right conclusion because he’s only doing it out of self interest. I’m sure he was all for draft deferrals too during the Viet Nam War. Yay for him.
Brett Singer commented on Jun 05 09 at 5:01 pmI think it will be interesting to see if he’s still this vocal at the next GOP convention. I think they’ll push him back underground by then, but who knows. It’s still a few years away.

I hate calling myself ‘white’ let alone a ‘republicant’ (misspelling intentional) because of this guy. In fact how the hell is this guy still alive.
