Love ‘Em or Leave ‘Em?: “Top Blogger” Lists and Working Mother’s ‘Most Powerful Moms In Social Media’

logo 3 Love Em or Leave Em?: Top Blogger Lists and Working Mothers Most Powerful Moms In Social MediaLet’s face it. They’re everywhere.  Blog awards, “best of” lists, “vote for me!” contests – you name it.  The same obsession with competition and industry domination that so often occurs in corporate America has translated seamlessly to the blogosphere.  Everyone wants to be recognized for their hard work and some thrive on the fame element of it all.  Also, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the more lists you appear on, the better chance that more opportunities might come your way.

But here’s the thing:

Unlike corporate America, the mom blogosphere is a community; and a tight-knit one at that.

For the most part, everyone is supportive of one another.  Sure, you have your hecklers and haters, but that’s par for the course.  I would venture to say that, overall, we’re all rooting for one another and share a sense of togetherness in these unchartered waters of social media.  I think that’s the reason why these lists can sometimes rub us the wrong way.  We all work hard and we all have had successes in some form or another.  Who’s to say which mom bloggers should make it onto certain lists while others don’t?  Maybe we just don’t want to take the time to harass our social circles for votes to win a (popularity) contest, or maybe we consider a successful blog to be one that continuously reflects great writing as opposed to one that generates a mind-boggling amount of advertising revenue.

We know that the uber mom bloggers like Dooce and The Pioneer Woman, while masters of their domain, are not the only “top” mom bloggers around.  Sure, they get regular coverage in mainstream media, but there are plenty of rockstar mom bloggers that may never get coverage from anyone beyond their peers.

That’s why it was so refreshing for me to see the Most Powerful Moms In Social Media list that Working Mother announced earlier this week.  Yes, Heather and Ree are on the list (no surprise there), but so are thirteen other stellar mom bloggers I know that are awesome and well-deserving of recognition (including MomCrunch’s own Katie Granju!).

So kudos to Working Mother for digging deeper and finding more than the usual suspects to shine the light on.

That list, like most ”Best of” in the ”Mom” community, is mighty monochromatic.
