With the news that finally, thirty years later, that Etan Patz killer may have been found, we all have missing children on our minds.
Did you know that 800,000 children are reported missing in the United States each year? That’s over 2,100 children each DAY.
The horror of it.
Etan Patz went missing thirty years ago yesterday in Manhattan, just 200 feet from his home. His family was determined to find him, never moving or changing their phone number for the last thirty years in case he decided to come home.
Etan’s missing status was noteworthy not only because he was a lost child, but also because he became the first “milk carton kid.” Meaning that his photo was plastered on milk cartons in an attempt to find him or find out information about where he could be.
We no longer put missing kids on milk cartons. Instead, we use technology.

Until Picmonkey I primarily used Photoshop for my photo editing, but as using images has become more important in blogging and social media, I’ve been frustrated with the amount of time it takes to edit photos in Photoshop. As awesome as it is, doing something like making a collage can take forever. I, sadly, didn’t really like Picnik in it’s early days so never really bothered to use it.
So, I’m embarrassed to admit I only just found out about publishing your blog to Kindle. It’s been allowed since 2009, apparently. I know, I know. (Enjoy that moment of superiority if you already knew.) I want to be sure to offer up a hat tip to blogger Lindsay of Dishwater Dreams who was kind enough to blog about this and bring it to my attention. She gives the simple step by step instructions you need to use to sign up, so be sure to go over there to follow her how-to.
But I have to admit, I’ve never heard anyone talking about this at conferences or online. Admittedly, it’s not a likely money maker – Amazon sets the prices at about $.99 a month – but it IS a way to get more eyes on your content.
And that is always a good thing.
Bonnie Stewart of The Crib Chronicles
Those of us that live and work online often also work from home, and sometimes what we do seems frivilous and, well, a lot like NOT working to those that are unfamiliar with how we work.
Bonnie, the author of the great blogs Crib Chronicles and Theory, shared an incident on her blog recently that highlighted those differences starkly with a friend – and also offers some great advice to those that love us connected folk.
It starts with this:
It’s easy to let Pinterest become the place where we pine (pun fully intended; pine/pin? get it?) over stuff we think we can never afford, or stuff that we just aren’t willing to make a priority… I know my pin boards often become a place for wishes and dreams rather than actually purchasing prospects.
But what if there were a way to find out every time and item that you loved and pinned was on sale? Wouldn’t that put you in your happy place?
Well, guess what: you can, thanks to a new startup called Lyst.

If you aren’t reading Randall Monroe’s xkcd web comic, well, you should be. Particularly if you’re a geek. Mr. Monroe’s stick drawing comics are the perfect mix of pop culture, humor, geekitude, and wry sarcasm, and have brightened up many of my days.
Today I came across yet another one of his comics that made me actually guffaw, so I decided to take a deeper look at his story. His bio is funny; it starts with “I’m just this guy, you know?”
