We’re not talking about Santa or the Tooth Fairy here, but those other things you believed…the things that your friends whispered to you during a sleepover. Or that your sadistic big brother told you in an effort to scare the ever loving crap out of you. Or that your parents told you in a misguided attempt to get you to stop doing whatever annoying thing you were bugging them with.

Not that I would know anything about that.

Check out my top picks for the silliest things kids (present and past) believe, and then tell me – What crazy thing did you believe as a kid, or what do your kids believe now?

Don't Swallow Bubble Gum!
If you swallow a piece of gum, it will stay in your stomach for 7 years. Or forever. OR, if you do it repeatedly, all the pieces will stick together and form one giant bubble gum ball in your belly. And nobody wants THAT.

I’m 34 and I STILL believe in some of these! ;-)

I was such a believer in the monsters under the bed myth when I was little that I still find myself pulling my hand back up if it falls off the side. It’s a habit I can’t seem to break.

I was embarrassingly old when I realized that not all the “good stuff” was in the crust of my bread!

My 5 yr old believes the saying “Of course I just saw what you did. I have eyes on the back of my head” but me not being able to help myself, had him look for said eyes and then said “OW” like he poked me in one of my “eyes” lol

I was terrified of snakes coming out of the shower drain when I was a kid!

Aleisha commented on Feb 08 12 at 10:27 am

Snakes!!! I absolutly am petrified os them and to this day my biggest fear is them comming up out of somewhere they should not. I live in the country setting and have had snakes get into my house and I totally freaked out.

Doris commented on Feb 08 12 at 1:07 pm

um, actually a snake coming out of the drain has actually happened… So its not silly to be scared its realistic.

FYI: I lived in South Georgia for a period of time and when I was 20 and pregnant with my first child I had moved back in with my parents while my significant other was finishing up his military career. I went to take a shower and my mother said, “are you planning on showering with the snake…” I thought she was kidding until I went into the bathroom and indeed there was a snake wrapped around the top of the shower…and not just any snake…a water moccasin. Yes, poisonous. Very scary. We figure since it was an old farm house and the way it was designed it was easy for the snake to come up through where the shower drained. At that time it drained straight to the ground..nice I know. Anyway, snakes in the bathroom do happen.

As a child my mother told me if I got out of bed in the night time the boogey mag would eat my toes as soon as they hit the floor. I used to climb from my bed to the night stand then hop to the dresser to get out the door to go to the bathroom! Then I would turn the light on and count my toes to see if I was successfull!

These are great, there are so many silly things we are taught as children that stick with us for life! I have to admit I am guilty of passing some of these along to my kids as well.

My sister and I convinced ourselves that there was a giant frog who lived at the bottom of the outhouse at our neighbors and if we ever sat our bottoms fully down on the seat, he would jump up and lick us. I have no idea where this ‘fact’ came from!

I believed so much in Santa Claus that I thought that he was so magical he could change his appearance from place to place and be everywhere at the same time! And the Easter Bunny forgot to come one year, so I told my mom (amazed that she forgot) told me to go back to my room in about 5 minutes, and he would probalby leave something. Sure enough, he did! I thought, WOW he’s so magical that he came into my house, and I didn’t even see him!! Gullible or wild imagination?

Christine Driskill commented on Feb 24 12 at 6:17 am

If I ever ate dog food or treats I thought that I would change into a dog so after I had some, I checked the mirror for whiskers and listen to my voice for barking!

Christine Driskill commented on Feb 24 12 at 6:24 am

Yeah, I’m 36 and I also still thought a couple of these were true. This is some pretty old school stuff.

I’m surprised the easter bunny or toothfairy didn’t make the list.
