Lice As I Know It

scratch. scratch. itch.
Oh you guys. OH YOU GUYS. Addie came bursting in the door yesterday proclaiming “I HAVE FLEAS! My head is itchy and there’s black things in my hair!”
“Silly girl, of course you don’t have fleas, come over here.”
I lifted one perfect curl off her perfect forehead and a bug scurried out and back into her golden tresses.
I called my husband and he was home within five minutes, I was at the doctor’s office within seven.
“Yep! It’s lice!” Our tiny little doctor proclaimed. He checked me, told me it’s perfectly natural to feel itchy and crawly at the thought of lice and sent me on my way with a prescription for goo and a very fine toothed comb.
24 hours later? We’re still battling.
I can’t even give you treatment advice as this is the first time I’ve EVER dealt with lice. I never had them growing up nor did I ever know anyone who dealt with them. What I’m learning is that a lot of people have dealt with them and dealt with them recently, they just don’t talk about them.
Apparently in France lice are like zits, everybody gets them, no big deal, just treat them as they come.
The truth is lice can cause no major health problems like fleas or mosquitoes, just a dent to your social life and pride. They have no respect for socioeconomic status, cleanliness or personal hygiene. I keep telling myself that Dr. Sears says I am NOT a dirty person. We are not a dirty family. I do NOT have a dirty house (especially after today!)
The biggest issue we’re having is Addie’s giant head full of thick wonderful curly hair. The prescription we were given didn’t do squat so we’ve moved on to home remedies that include common cooking ingredients, shower caps and days off of school. Tomorrow I’ll do one last treatment, a nitpicking (GAH I HATE THAT WORD NOW) to see if we can get her passed for a return to school.
A return to school with her head coated in this spray. (Seriously, if you’re kids don’t have lice but there’s a chance they could get them? Find out about lice prevention sprays you can either buy or make, because this suuuucks.)
More on what worked and what didn’t later, but for now, what’s your lice history?

amberdoty commented on Jan 19 12 at 10:24 pmUghhhh, Casey. So sorry for this! Poor Addie. I hope they are all cleared up soon. I have a daughter with a head full of thick, curly, hair too. I can only imagine what it’s like to try and get them out of that.
What a nightmare.
Cindy commented on Jan 20 12 at 4:52 amI’ve dealt with it twice this year, once with the 4yo and once with the 6yo (it seems to go around school and preschool pretty regularly). It’s unpleasant, but manageable. I live in NZ, and have used a “natural” product called MOOV head lice solution – it has a minty smell that’ll knock you off your feet, but my kids tolerated it fine (I think the main component in it is eucalyptus oil). With it, you treat their hair once a week for 3 weeks. For the first few days, I nit-picked compulsively – at least twice a day – which cut down on the lice and eggs dramatically. We also did the usual of washing all the bed linens, any coats and jackets they’d been wearing, and putting their pillows on a hot cycle in the dryer. I should say too that for my child with curly hair, I found it much easier to nitpick when his hair was wet. It all sucks (and makes you compulsively scratch your own head for weeks), but it’s just one of the many indignities that children bring into your life…
mbmom7 commented on Jan 20 12 at 9:49 pmI used mayonnaise on head ( for a few hours) , a vinegar rinse, and careful combing. It made my older daughter’s hair look great too! (Though I think the case of lice my little daughter had was really grilled cheese crumbs- some teachers are a little too zealous in labeling lice.)
heather d commented on Jan 21 12 at 2:20 amI heard that lice don’t like heads with hairspray on, but luckily I’ve never had to test it.
misty smith commented on Jan 23 12 at 12:07 pmPut a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil in your shampoo and she should never get them again,I have 4 kids and when they were small it seemed as though every month they would come home with lice, finally I went to the health store and this is what they suggested. And it worked!
FELICIA commented on Jan 23 12 at 12:15 pmI know it sounds gross but with the breakout we had on Thanksgiving I covered her head in mayonnaise in the morning, put a shower cap over it, and then didn’t rinse out until night. I got lucky that I have a kid who doesn’t like mayonnaise so I didn’t have to worry about her trying to eat it. I also through all the stuffed animals in a plastic bag and kept them in the basement for 2 weeks, washed every single article of clothing in the house (along with all the bedding, bought some sort of bedding spray for lice, and vacuumed every inch of the furniture and carpet. She also went through and extensive amount of combing. I got very OCD on it and it was gone in 24 hrs. I still check every week so that if it happens again I can catch it early. You can pretty much say that lice drove me insane.
Susie commented on Jan 23 12 at 2:51 pmI just discovered (I think) lice on my 4 year old over the weekend. She was scratching her head like crazy and I found some very hard to see nits (but not much else). I am hoping we caught it early. My husband could not find anything and thinks that I am crazy. We all did one round with RID last night and I also used the gel on her hair. I have been doing load after load of laundry as well as vacuuming up a storm, and all her stuffed animals have been banished to the basement in garbage bags. I am hoping we are nit free and can go back to preschool tomorrow. If not, I found a a special salon that has some FDA approved heat treatment and that’s where we are going next. My head itches just thinking about!
Daisy commented on Mar 16 12 at 12:18 amI am absolutely freaking out after finding lice in my daughter’s hair. I was doing her hair this morning and saw one moving around. I bought an electric comb and I’m pretty happy with it. It makes a buzzing noise that stops when it finds a louse and it also kills them. I have combed her hair three times today, the first time I sectioned it and combed really thouroughly and found about 50 different sized lice. The next time I found 4 and the time after that only one. It only kills the adults, not the nits (eggs). I also bought a conditioner treament and comb that removes the eggs.
The great thing about the electric comb is that you can use it to detect lice. So it seems that my other daughter and I don’t have any, so it definitely isn’t as contagious as I thought. The comb was expensive, but I think it is a good investment and I’ll use it regularly to check for lice and give myself some peace of mind.
