I mean, come on...awww!

I never had a pet as a child, I had the reminder of a pet as a child, as my mom gave our elderly neighbor her Siamese cat named Wicker after I was born. Something about my suddenly causing her allergies and the cat just couldn’t stay.

So Wicker lived with Dot and we were able to visit him on occasion.

The first time a pet ever really entered my life is when my dad began dating a woman who would later become my step mom. I was just shy of the age Addie is now and, you guys? I can say with my whole seven-year-old heart that pets are the COOLEST THINGS EVER.

However the 29-year-old mom who is sitting here typing this would beg to differ.

CATS ARE THE COOLEST PETS EVER.

I am not a dog person, these two little people already need me enough, I don’t need another needy creature trolling the hallways of my home. (Sorry, dog lovers.)

We adopted two adult cats at the same time from the Humane Society, one with special needs, while the one-eyed special needs kitty isn’t exactly Addie’s favorite, she still says hi to him whenever he’s around and she kisses him goodnight as she heads to bed.

A couple of weeks ago Addie asked if Percy could be her cat (Percy is the two-eyed cat.) Percy likes to lie on her bed, sleep with her and lets her do pretty much anything she wants to when he’s around. She reads to him, she plays with him and she hugs him every chance she gets.

What’s more, when it comes to pet ownership, she has become responsible for them, she feeds them twice daily, monitors their water and litter and makes sure they don’t go anywhere they’re not supposed to be. It took a few weeks of “Did you remember to feed the cats?” before it finally sunk in that they needed to eat everyday,  now it’s part of her morning routine.

Will we always be a cat only household? Probably not, my husband loves dogs and so does Addie, but for now Addie has someone in this house who she can tell her deepest darkest secrets to, who always has time for her and loves all the extra attention. (Not that we don’t have time for her, there’s just moments when we’re all busy and things are hectic, oy, you know … it’s called life.)
