Our Greatest Gift Hits of Christmas, 2011
Now that we’re a few days past Christmas, and the wrapping paper is mostly all cleaned up, and the boxes have been sent away to the recycling place, I’m getting a sense for what gifts may be the biggest hits in our family this year.
Some years Santa really hits it out of the park, and I think this may have been one of those years. Everyone got some supercool gifts that they seem to really love, so I thought I’d share a few.
You will notice that I didn’t include any gifts for Jon in this little gifty roundup, and that’s because he asked that I not buy him anything this year for Christmas or for his birthday, which falls on January 10, and instead let him choose and buy a new Android tablet for himself. You see, he had a really cute 7 inch tablet that he loved…until a few weeks ago when Danger Baby sweetly toddled up to her Daddy, grabbed Jon’s tablet off his lap, and in the blink of an eye, slung it across the room, shattering it. Jon was not amused, and he is now shopping the best price on a replacement.
Maybe I’ll add a photo of Jon with his new gadget when he gets it :-)

So now I want to hear from all of you. What is the most special gift that anyone in your family gave or received this year? Which gift has your kids most entertained for the past few days? Tell me about your own holiday surprises in the comments below.

A.K. commented on Dec 29 11 at 2:42 pmWell, I love coffee. I got a coffee maker that I can set so that the coffee’s ready in the morning. I also have a new sewing machine that I am going to try out today! Yippee!!! Who says girls don’t like gifts with electrical cords?
leah commented on Dec 29 11 at 3:00 pmWow! We got socks and a new snow shovel, the kids got socks and a couple books, our two month old got a cloth dolly and a star teething blanket from learning curve. We don’t really do a huge “gift” thing on Christmas.
misha commented on Dec 29 11 at 3:19 pmI received a huge box of old, vintage, family photos! All of which I didn’t know existed. (and neither did my father until recently) None are older than 1930! I am the history keeper in our family and this gift was awesome!
I adore the little bench! I think Mom’s beau is a keeper :)
xo, misha
AmyK commented on Dec 29 11 at 11:00 pmFirst – my daughter has the same slippers (for her birthday!). She loooves them.
Anyhow, for Christmas this year, we are in Puerto Vallarta. Best present ever. We gave the kids small presents and bought a piece of Oaxacan art for ourselves. Our past few holidays have been tragic and exhausting (deaths, injuries, illness, trauma), so getting away with just my husband and kids has been amazing.
PS: The bench is beautiful.
2hounds commented on Dec 30 11 at 5:40 amOur biggest gift was definitely the plane tickets home to my parents. Well worth it even for only 5 days, my son and them just couldn’t get enough of each other and it was jsut great to see them Other things? I loved the new laptop, son lovet the new bike and helmet, etc., but I jsut as much loved the coffees with my mom, going shopping alone with my husband (I mean no child along) and we even got to go out one night, which we never do usually we have no babysitter. :) Was GREAT Xmas for all these little things.
Kristina commented on Dec 30 11 at 7:47 amZoe, my 11 yr old was surprised with a kyrios tablet from Grandma. We got her the owl puppets she really really wanted (she loves owls), and the Spyro Skylanders videogame for the xbox. It is sooooo cool! lol. Vincent, my 3 yr old got his 1st bike from Santa, but I think his favorite gift was his Smokey the Firetruck. He loves shooting the water balls at “fires”. He also got a green and yellow john deere childs recliner from grandma. Pretty good Christmas all together I think:)
SNSinNC commented on Dec 30 11 at 1:04 pmI think our two-year-old would be scared of the dancing Elmo…
Anyway, C, our two-year-old got way too much stuff (play kitchen, pop-up tunnel, table and chairs and a bunch of trucks and tractors) but by far his favorite gift is the guitar we bought him. He’s obviously too little, but he is obsessed with guitars and we found a cheap child-sized one. Bummer that neither DH nor I can play or even tune the thing, but I can’t believe how good C is getting at it – or how gentle he is with it. He makes it make actual, musical sounds – he doesn’t just hit it over and over, which is what I guessed would happen. Definitely some music lessons in that kid’s future. So now we have this two year old minstrel wandering around our house…
Beth commented on Dec 31 11 at 12:06 amMy sister gave me a vintage version of the game Mystery Date. However, my husband and two sons refuse to play with me! Bummer…
Mama/Nanny commented on Jan 02 12 at 10:17 pmSo glad baby girl likes dancing Elmo!
