The Hardest Part of My Day? Surviving the Morning Routine
If you were to ask a group of women what they think the hardest thing about motherhood is I’m sure you would get a variety of answers. There’s the loss of sleep, dealing with tantrums, the endless assortment of bodily fluids you’re responsible for cleaning, did I mention the loss of sleep?
Those are all tough, but for me, at this stage in our lives, the hardest part is the weekday morning routine. I’m currently working two jobs while I attempt to take my career in a new direction which means I work late nights and then, with the help of what would be a lethal dose of caffeine in an average human, I get up offensively early to get the kids dressed and ready for school and myself ready for work.
I try and make this process as painless as possible for everyone by planning ahead. Try being the operative word. I always start the week off with good intentions. I carefully pack their bookbags and lay out their clothes on Sunday night, but by the time Wednesday morning comes I’m sniffing the dirty laundry trying to determine which pair of Anders’ jeans smells least dirty while wearing shoes that don’t match. At least one child is crying because they can’t locate something they simply cannot go an entire school day without, but oddly couldn’t be bothered to keep track of and I’m inevitably late for a meeting I didn’t even realize I had scheduled until I arrive at work still wearing mis-matched shoes. You know, for example.
One thing I definitely do not have the time (or the skill) for during this mass chaos is preparing a morning meal. The kids are provided breakfast at school, but it isn’t served until a couple of hours after they arrive and they always wake up complaining of hunger.
Finding something for them to eat can be tricky. Anders doesn’t like milk, so, cereal is a hard sell and Danica has become such a picky eater of late I often wonder how she survives on so few calories. It’s always a frustrating part of my day in between tearing the house apart looking for socks and negotiating the terms under which they will allow their teeth to be brushed, to find something for everyone to have for breakfast.
This week we tried something new in the frosted devil’s donettes. Surprisingly enough for two kids with very different tastes, Anders and Danica both loved them, which I’m sure had a lot to do with their chocolaty coating. They even sat down at the kitchen table and ate them long enough for me to put on make-up for a change and I consider that a major victory.
Many thanks to Hostess for sponsoring this post and for providing me and family with a supply of Donettes. Find out more about Hostess Donettes at their Facebook fan page.
