I Took My Daughter to the Circus and All I Got Was Uncomfortable

circus 8504 200x300 I Took My Daughter to the Circus and All I Got Was UncomfortableWe’ve gone to the circus every year since moving to Indy, specifically the Ringling Bros. circus. I grew up going to it — it’s been around longer than my grandparents — so when I was offered free tickets to take my family, I of course took the chance. I hate saying anything bad, but the truth is something was off this year. I’ve always known there to be a seedy underbelly to the circus, but it wasn’t until this year that it seemed more obvious. Perhaps it’s because we sat closer? There’s something to be said about the nosebleed seats: you don’t see (or smell) much of the detail.

What was a tradition is going to be ending with this last circus we attended — and for more than one reason, which is sad because there are parts of the circus I adore. But none of my most favorite parts involve animals. It’s one thing to allow a human to do silly and stupid things with themselves. But majestic tigers and elephants? Not so much.

We had to walk through protesters to even get into the building, which was the first thorn in the evening. I just started off uneasy. Then there was the merchandise: $10 for a snow cone in a ridiculous cup? $25 for a flashing twirling toy wand? Oh well, I wasn’t the one buying it. There also must have been a few new horses because the whole horse routine seemed strange. Then there were the tigers. Tasha the tiger seemed to be having an off night so when she was forced into performing by a shove and a hit in the back from a worker, I started to squirm in my seat. The elephants are the supposed highlight, but making something that big get up and down off the ground like that? I’ve been pregnant — big things don’t move so easily.

However, the human performers were spectacular. What a strange and wondrous existence to travel around, wear thousands of rhinestones, and have your main job be 10 minutes of insane performance. That I can get into. I could have watched the humans do ridiculous things all night. Forget the tigers — bring back the four girls that fit inside a 2′ x 2′ box!

With my love of performers I’ve already begun to look into Cirque du Soleil but I’ve heard some of them can be a little racy for the under-18 crowd. Not to mention the few performances I’ve seen on TV may leave Addie way more uncomfortable than I was at the regular circus. Has anyone taken their kids? I’d love some advice.

While I didn’t take any photos of the animals, I took a few of the performers to show my husband when we got home. The only person I forgot to photograph was the man they SET ON FIRE and flung across the ENTIRE ARENA. Who thought that stunt up?

Jugglers
Did you ever see A Bug's Life? You know the two pillbugs who don't make any sense but are very excited about everything? That's these guys.

What are your feelings on the circus?

I’ve taken my kids to the Cirque. We took my son when he was 8 or 9 a few years ago & he loved it. Then we took him (now 11) & my 7 yr old daughter this year. She was completely enthralled (she had just taken gymnastics this year so she was really impressed & commented on their abilities to balance). My son thought it was boring after about 20 mins – I guess he figured “seen it once, seen it all”. My husband & I love the Cirque and have been going since the mid-90s.
On the flip side, I’ve never been to an animal circus!

Circuses are BEYOND evil, especially Ringling Bros. Animals are tortured and die. Please stop going!!

we only get the Shrine Circus around here. I grew up with Ringling, I think they’ve all gone downhill. and I griped about $6 snowcones:(

Good for you…I’d never, ever support any circus that uses animals. If you’re interested in seeing exactly how they convince those elephants to move around, there are several undercover videos on youtube, from PETA as well as other organizations and activists. Recently Ringling Brothers agreed to pay a record-breaking penalty to the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act that occurred between 2007 and 2011.

Delving further, they are paying $270,000. The USDA can levy a fine of $10,000 for each violation of the AWA, so there are 27 instances that they know of. Of course, as part of the settlement Ringling Brother’s admits to no guilt or wrongdoing.

The lawsuit that brought about the settlement was brought on by PETA…The lawsuit alleged that the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is in violation of the Endangered Species Act and that the circus systematically abuses and exploits elephants by using metal bullhooks to guide and control the animals, as well as chaining their legs while they are not performing.

The lawsuit was dismissed in October on the grounds that the two animal protection organizations did not have the standing to bring the lawsuit against Feld Entertainment because they could not establish legal “injury” to themselves.

Not long before that an elephant died because they refused to get outside veterinary care. They were recently in an appeals court because they refused to hand over their elephants’ veterinary records, and are accused of destroying veterinary reports when the USDA has demanded to see them.

I’m disgusted by the circus. Always have been. Clowns are creepy, but more than anything I have issues with how they treat the animals. It’s horrible. I’ll teach my kids about what they do and let them decide if they want to go to one when they’re older, but I would never take them to one.

We haven’t been, but Circus Vargus is an animal free circus in our area. We’re waiting for the kids to be older, so they can appreciate it. Maybe next year.

I will never go to a circus. The way they treat the animals is absolutely horrible. However, a circus consisting entirely of consenting adult HUMANS, sure, I think those would be wonderful!

We took my daughter to a cirque show this summer right after her sixth birthday and she was completely enthralled with it and loved every second of it. That said my daughter is my daughter takes artistic gymnastics classes and ballet for 3 years at that time and had just finished a rhythmic gymnastics camp and we have taken her to many other artsy performances earlier that summer with the Spoleto festival in Charleston, SC. I think the main reason she found it very interesting is that we had talked to her about the things she is doing now could lead to her being able to do things that she saw. If you do decide to take your kids I would try taking them to a children ballet performance first to see how they react to more artsy performances it would be a good gauge to see how they would react and then find something that they could relate to in the show. They have tumblers and acrobats which started out in gymnastics and many of the arielest are also professional trained dancers.

I haven’t been to a circus since I was very little and I don’t think I’ll take my kids either. There is a local performing group of teens that is awesome, but there are no animals there either.
And I’ve been to one Cirque show… I don’t remember seeing anything that was risque, but the show was awesome! I am in awe of what people can do! I bet Addie would love it!

In St Louis there’s a local Cirque type circus every June and it is FABULOUS (and MUCH more affordable than Cirque du Soleil!)… we went every year for the few that we lived there and now make a trip up to see it from Nashville. It’s an awesome, intimate performance and geared more toward families than Cirque du Soleil. They have a few animals thrown in there as well, but they are family pet animals… dogs and horses and they do a fabulous job with them. It’d be worth it for you guys to make a quick trip to STL for that… and possibly a new tradition! It’s called Circus Flora… http://www.circusflora.org/

Circuses are horrible to animals. Please stop taking your kids to see that atrocity.
