10 Fads I Hope My Kids Never Notice

slap bands 300x300 10 Fads I Hope My Kids Never NoticeOver the years I have been know to participate in many a fad. Slap bracelets, mood rings, super scrunchy socks, and rolled jeans, to name just a few. As a kid, they were simply the things to do. As in, all the cool kids were doing it, so you bet your hiney I was going to be doing it as well.

To this day, I still miss scrunchy socks. A lot.

But as a parent, I have a different perspective on it. At this point in my life, childhood fads are mostly just ridiculous fashion choices or annoying wastes of money. Yes, I realize that I’m starting to sound like my Grandfather. Now get off my lawn!

But seriously, I look at the things that kids these days are into, and I find myself fervently hoping that my kids don’t pick up on them. Luckily I only have boys, so there are a ton of fads and trends that I don’t even have to worry about. Can you say hair feathers, anyone?

Find out my top ten offenders after the jump.

Heelys
Heelys, the footwear that masquerades as a shoe but is really a shoe/roller skate blend. While I am sure they are fun (!) and convenient (!), it seems to me that they are more like a ticket to the Emergency Room. And since when is walking such a horrible thing?

Do you agree? Disagree? What would you add to the list?

I must agree with all of these, especially the sagging pants, JB hair and the baseball hats!! I really can’t stand those hats!

I am general agreement. We have had silly bandz, but I just throw them away when they annoy me. We also have Squinkies. I hate skinny jeans on men/boys. It NEVER looks good.

My daughter begs for squinkies all the time, but it is a general rule in this house that there will never be any “tiny toys”floating around here. And as for silly bandz I just don’t get the point of those.

I am so glad my kids aren’t trendy. My daughter wants squinkies (but she is 6 and wants everything on every single commercial so she is happy with anything). My son makes can’t stand Justin Bieber or his sagging skinny pants so that gets rid of 3 of them. We do have a few Backugon and the girl things that are like them but are magnet operated. Also, we have a giant pikachu stuffed animal but I am pretty sure that existed before they were born. There dad got it as a present for a dog (he’s a weird one) and decided when I got pregnant that we should keep it instead (because every baby needs a pikachu that is 3 times bigger than him). I hadn’t even heard of the masked sweatshirts yet and I already told my son no on the heelys unless he got a job to buy them himself (he’s 10 so I am safe for 6 years)

My daughter is 7 and silly bandz made a whirl through our household. I was okay with those because I remember growing up I had those silly rubber bracelets all the way up the arm, cutting off the circulation…I limited my girl to 3 on each wrist and trading was okay too.

boys/men should never ever ever wear skinny jeans…it just isnt right!

Having 5 kids, 4 of which are girls ages 6, 7, 9, 10 we already fell into most the things in your blog. The 7 year old is in LOVE with JUSTIN BEIBER and she herself has the short beiber hair cut ( BUT ITS ADORABLE ON HER LOL) the older girls are obsessed with squinkees and they all four own heelies which never get worn with the wheels because its against the school dress code and the wheels had to be removed!! The things I hate most in this house is LITTLEST PET SHOPS< we must have over 400 of those pets not counting all the houses, rc cars, carrying cases… etc…. The kids trade them at school and are always fighting over them. I do not care for silly bandz either. Last trip to cedar point I seen adults wearing 20 on each arm, REALLY?? but, kids will be kids and I knew how cool I felt when my mom brought me home a new slap bracelet or wwjd do bracelet so I could stay part of the COOL club, so I will buy them what they ask for in orrder to make them feel the same way i did.

I’d take skinny jeans over sagging pants. I don’t even understand how they stay up. My ass would be freezing.

Samantha at ShesNotBroken commented on Dec 13 11 at 10:42 pm

totally agree! if i ever have a son he will NEVER have long hair, or saggy pants. me and my husband are real country though. and old fashioned.

heather commented on Dec 13 11 at 11:10 pm

I agree boys and saggy pants don’t look good on them. Plus the silly bands are nothing rubber bands made into shapes and they don’t last long either I got a free one at the 4th of July parade in my home town it lasted a month then it broken. I remeber the slap bracelets I have 2 or 3 of thoses and they are cool like those. Now they have come out with slap watched and I have one of those and they are cool and neat to have….

Janelle commented on Dec 14 11 at 12:32 am

The saggy pants are the WORST trend EVER!!!

Susan (5 Minutes for Mom) commented on Dec 19 11 at 5:27 pm

I HATE skinny jeans along with the short hoodie jackets for men. Gross.

carrie commented on Jan 14 12 at 1:40 am

After being plowed into by ore than one heathen on wheels, I have banned the purchase or receipt of Heelys,
And I don’t really care if “All the other kids have them” because I’m sure all the other kids also have broken arms, and have run over Old Mrs. Finch with her walker.
