elf book 300x300 Inspired Ideas for Your Elf on the Shelf

We haven’t really come up with any great Christmas traditions yet. At least, we haven’t come up with any that don’t revolve around food. As the boys get older, I’d really like to have something fun and silly that we can do every year.

This year I’m especially intent on finding small ways to celebrate The Season. We’re deep in the middle of a house remodel, and won’t even be here for Christmas, so we’re not doing any decorating. No lights on the house, no tree, no nothing. So, after seeing a ton of adorable Elf on the Shelf ideas lately, I decided to give it a try.

Our very own Elf is on his way to our house and I’m busy thinking of all of the fun things he’s going to do. The original purpose of The Elf on the Shelf was to encourage kids to be aware of their behavior. The Elf would keep an eye on the kids, and anything inappropriate would be reported back to Santa and could land them on the much dreaded Naughty List. I’m not 100% sure that story will work with my kids. Although in years past, I have really enjoyed using “SANTA IS WATCHING” as a threat. Mostly because it usually worked.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming our little Elf into our family and finding fun things for him to do every night while the kids are sleeping. I think the boys are going to enjoy discovering his antics in the morning.

If you don’t have one yet, you can get your very own Elf on the Shelf here. And then you can take inspiration from these mischievous elves…and check back, because I’m hoping to add more as I find them!

Elf in the Pantry
Uh oh. This elf made a mess with the peanuts! This would work with almost anything you keep in jars in your pantry. Oatmeal, nuts, raisins, chocolate chips. The list could go on and on. And cleaning it up could be fun...and yummy!

Do you have an Elf on your shelf? If so, have you ever done anything super creative and fun with it? And did you forget to move your Elf around every night! I’m SURE I’m going to do that a few times … or more!

Thank you for this! Just a few minutes ago I posted at Strollerderby about our Elf AND how I forgot to move him on the first night. I edited it to add the link to your post. Cute!

I just gave my daughter-in-law one of my “many” Elf on the shelves little guys…AND she put it on a windowsill for her 3 babies (pups: Caesar, Snoop, and Eden) to watch AND behave.

I love the Elf on a Shelf. I was looking for a tradition to start with just our family of four, something new for just us. Something our kids would want to pass down to their kids when they have them. So when I stumbled upon this I was so excited. We have had Buddy the Elf for over 2 years and have had tons of fun. We hide him each night somewhere new. The first time we forgot to move him we just told the kids that he was trying to trick them.

I saw one today where they had the elf doing snow angels on the countertop in salt or sugar. It was cute!
