How Big Kids Are Better Than Babies.
I heard you gasp. “BUT HOW CAN YOU SAY ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER!?” Because I can. And that’s exactly what I did when I wrote how babies are better than big kids. Some of the main bullet points were that big kids can be smelly, loud, emotionally volatile and dangerous. But they can also be the coolest little humans you’ll ever have the privilege of hanging out with. While I relish the time I get to spend alone with my new baby while my big baby is off at school, there’s no denying that these big ones come with perks as they grow up.
Oh the self sufficiency! I still remember the first Saturday morning I woke up to Addie watching Looney Tunes and eating a a bowl of cereal that she had gotten herself. Cody and I both celebrated a bit knowing that we had finally made it to that point in parenthood where we could sleep in ever so slightly come the weekend. (We later mourned the loss of gluttonous sleeping in seeing as we are now awoken in the early morning by little squawks via monitor from the room down the hall.)
Addie has cool toys. The kind of toys I have no shame in admitting to playing with when she’s not around. Dress up ponies, Barbies, really cool puzzles and building blocks and not to mention the grand poobah…a Nintendo DS. It’s also fun to play games with her now that we’ve moved past the basics of Candyland and Chutes and Ladders. The movies and TV shows certainly get better as well. (I see your WonderPets and raise you classic Tom & Jerry.)
Kids are funny, whether they mean to be or not. Today Addie proclaimed “MOM. I AM NOT ENTERTAINED.” from the backseat confirming that she truly does believe it is my sole duty in life to make sure she is never bored. I assured her that only boring people are capable of being bored and she went on to find a bouncy ball and make it her car pet.
Vivi is an excellent baby, top notch when it comes to babies. But Addie as a big sister? Oh how my heart melts with the love she has for her baby sister. My mom was worried Addie would become very bored when she realized Vivi doesn’t do much, but what my mom didn’t realize is that with this age difference? I pretty much brought the best. toy. ever. home for Addie. Not to mention that Addie is easily one of Vivi’s favorite toys as well.
Babies and big kids both have their struggles and bonuses, and over the last few months I have really tried to focus more on the bonuses than the difficulties.
What’s one of your favorite features of your big kid?

Babble Welcomes New Blog Kid Scoop, For Parents of Bigger Kids | Strollerderby commented on Oct 05 11 at 9:00 amTina commented on Oct 04 11 at 10:52 pmPlaying REAL games with them–not Candy Land! Like you, watching them with their siblings. Watching as they learn (that first grade year was AMAZING for my first born, as he took off reading, tonight I put the babies down and he and I were just reading together in the living room with relaxing music on–it was SO nice). Watching sporting events with them, going to THEIR sporting events as the actually get kind of good and cheering them on. Seeing their interests develop, and how each one is so different. You’re right, big kids are kind of cool! :)

Lisa commented on Oct 05 11 at 1:03 pmCasey, Big Kids say the coolest things. Baby babble is cute but I’m still the only one who can understand my kids on video from when they were toddlers. Wisdom from the mouth of my 9-year-old? I can share with everybody!
Laura Vivoni (@mantybat) commented on Oct 06 11 at 1:55 amI have always liked big kids better than babies, and I must admit that I would sometimes feel bad about saying this when any of my daughters where babies, but even though they have been my favorite babies ever, I couldn’t help for secretly wishing that they could talk already and walk and all the stuff big kids do. Now my youngest is finally 5 and I am so happy to hang out with both my daughters now that they are older. We can bond with different things, we can listen to similar music, and watch similar TV shows (more with the 10 y/o though)
But I think big kids are so much more fun than babies.
Christine commented on Oct 06 11 at 4:49 pmI am having a hard time with my kids growing up so fast. This was a great article to remind me that the fun times are not over, there is lots more fun to come!
tabitha commented on May 20 12 at 1:05 ami agree big kids are better than babies because i can do more with my daughter now and with out carrying so much stuff that it’s easyer to.be spontaneous with a big kid because you don’t need to worry about nap time and its so much easyer to grab food on the go but best of all is haw much more she can shoe me appreciation
