The Perfect Shoes for the Holidays
In my opinion, everyone should own at least one pair of red shoes. They can brighten up even the most boring day and add the perfect pop of color to my dark winter uniform. Find out where you can buy both of the adorable flats pictured when you click through.
Maraisusa Shoes: Great Height, Great Style, Great Price
Early this summer I test-drove my new Pierre Hardy for Gap denim wedges with a five inch heel. I sang their praises as I was amazed by the fact that I was able to walk over three miles in Manhattan without feeling unsteady, let alone uncomfortable. (Click here to read more and see the shoes) And my love affair continued every time I laced up these “ruby slippers”—they always got me home blister and pain free. It was the best $98 I had ever spent on a pair of shoes.
Well, I have to admit, last week my Pierre Hardy’s met their match: the cobblestone and steep stepped terrain that makes up Villefranche Sur Mer. My brother has lived in in this charming old seaside village in the south of France for over 20 years, so I know the lay of the land. And that is exactly why I packed my Pierre’s. I thought if any heel could hold me up here it would be these. But the first night I put them on, I stumbled my way down the steps and over the cobblestones so much that I changed into my flip flops I happened to have in my bag, before setting out on the short walk home.
And this “defeat” got me thinking about other heel options that are comfortable, chic, and affordable. I remembered admiring a friends shoes a while back. She told me they were from a Brooklyn-based shoe designer called Maraisusa. I went to the site and found the pair, pictured above, that she was wearing, plus some other low heeled numbers that are super stylish, and still qualify as a (height) game changer. They also have some fabulous flats as well. With much of the collection priced under $100, I definitely plan on picking up a pair or two for my next trip.

My Fashionable Friend Fridays: Jeans, Leather Jackets, and High Top Sneakers

For this week’s Fashionable Friend Fridays, I am featuring my friend Victoria, who I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the past year. She is a friend of a friend (that’s how we met), lives in my neighborhood, and our kids are in the same school—the reasons we continue to cross paths. From the first time I met Victoria, I admired her effortlessly cool, casually chic style. She is also one of those savvy stylish people who rotates a few uniform looks. (If only I could be that person, I would save so much time standing in front of the closet wondering what to wear, not to mention, never overpack for a vacation again!)
One particular ensemble of Victoria’s that I love is slim—read not super skinny—jeans
a black leather jacket, and, the piece de resistance in my opinion: Nike leather high top sneakers, which, I believe, she has a few pairs in fun and fashionable color combinations. (See how to design a custom pair.)
Perhaps it’s because she lives in downtown New York , or perhaps it’s because she used to be an art director, but it seems the perfect uniform for an urban mom. But I think any mom who wants to look casual-chic with a little edge should consider this—I have–and the fact the shoes are so comfortable is the cherry on top, or in this case, bottom.

Comfortable and Stylish Shoes with a Heel
Without question I have embraced flats. Since leaving my full time magazine job I have traded my platforms for ballet flats (and now that it’s summer, flip flops) which are more suited to my current lifestyle. And while My love affair with the flat is real, I do still yearn for that boost of stature and confidence that only comes from wearing a heel. And even though I still slip into my five or more inch wedges or platforms for certain meetings and evening affairs, it’s not often enough to satisfy my desire.
That is why last week, I embraced the clog—in the form of these Swedish Hasbeens. This classic shoe often associated with the Dutch and nurses, had a huge revival this Spring when they walked the Chanel runway. (Be sure to check out my fellow blogger Cathy Hale’s post that showcases high end designer versions.) But trendiness aside, the clog truly was the answer to my heel-deficient shoe dilemma. And, it’s not the only answer. I have selected some other styles of shoes that successfully combine height, comfort and style to give you the pleasure of a little, or a little more, lift without the pain. See my selects after the jump. Continue reading »
