I’d add cloth diapers, but the cool newer pocket style, that are as easy as disposables, a lot more moms are trying them, or at least are interested, but the whole thing can be scary, having a few to try would be really awesome, there are even special diapering services that will let you rent them. I made all of mine, and I’m in love with them, the money savings are fantastic, and they are just as easy to use as disposables, BUT they aren’t for everyone.
I’m glad you covered the lanolin and the milk storage bags, those things are awesome, but have you ever seen Milkies? They are covers you can put on while breastfeeding and they’ll catch all the let down from the other side, then that milk can be saved too!

These are great ideas for most moms probably, but I don’t agree that “every mom needs” all these things. Believe it or not, some of us don’t pump or use pacifiers or bottles at all! Maybe I’m more unusual than I thought, lol. Anyway, it is definitely possible to mother a baby successfully without the majority of that gear!

I agree with Crunchy I never used a diaper genie just a regular small trash can changed every day and brought to a bigger can with lid on the porch to keep the smell away no problem. Ariana never used a pacifier and they gave her one at the hospital which ended up getting lost and never touched again so all the ones family decided to by also went unused and missing. the breast pump and pads would have been nice however I never used bags for storage I used the freezer bottles with lids and found that it works just as well of course I think I started pumping too early and never had enough pumped before she would have it gone she was a pretty big baby. her father also had issues bonding so would use it while I was asleep to help with it not that I minded I liked the extra sleep. BOPPY PILLOW ALL TIME BEST GIFT EVER!!! I didn’t have a baby shower but bought myself one and loved loved loved it I used it for everything including as a seat next to mommy on the couch so I could have my hands free she was off the floor and snuggled in safe. Mine was actually called the cuddle U which included a velcro seat to hold baby in so she could sit up and not wiggle out and fall. The baby essentials kit and the thermometer would have been awesome to have I know there has been times I need some of the things in the kit and a thermometer she wont fight me to use and haven’t had it. good list though would have loved to have these things though as Crunchy said most are not necessary.

I loved the breast flow bottles. They helped my daughter continue to breast feed and made the transition to just bottles much easier. I would mention with the breast feeding equipment that a good nipple guard is good to know about even if you don’t need it. Sometimes the little things make a difference.

I think all of these ideas are great..My only concern is a safety concern the car mirror, they are not crash test approved. This information was given to me when I had my car seat professionally installed. The quick clean micro steam bags are a great amenity I used mine all the time!

I usually give a mix of items I found the most helpful during the first six months, including some of the items above; but also an easy to use with one hand water bottle; little snack bags from Trader Joes (like the chocolate nut clusters); one or two first words books by Bright Baby; a swaddling blanket or stroller fleece sack; the tethering links for toys, sippy cups, keys; some sort of woobie/soft comfort item; if the due date is close to winter, I try to find a full-body fleece suit that can be used with a front carrier/stroller/car-seat (this includes estimating the right size fleece). And depending on how well I know the mom-to-be, I might end up getting her some K-Y and put a little note on it with a ribbon, saying “Until Mama gets her mojo back” because, let’s get real, that something no one really prepares you about. Usually I put it in a big bag or basket that can be used to store toys, laundry, or an extra diaper bag/day activity bag sans anything that screams “baby bag!”.

Diaper Genies are a waste of money. If you have a bunch of plastic shopping bags from the grocery store, just use those. Throw the diaper in, tie it shut, throw it away! A hell of a lot cheaper!

Never understood a Diaper Genie. What is the purpose of keeping used (dirty/smelly/nasty) diapers anywhere in the house? UGH! As mentioned in other posts – bag it in a shopping bag and trash it, if not every change then at least daily.

In our car seat safety class, the instructor commented that the mirrors used for checking on your baby can be dangerous. Anything that is in the back seat can be a projectile item that could harm your baby if in an accident (mirrors, plastic toys that hang on the top). I would just use with caution if you need an item like that. She also mentioned that looking in a mirror to see your baby can be distracting while driving.

Oh and I’d recommend the my brest friend over the boppy. It snaps on to your waist and was so much easier and comfortable to use.
