Have you read The Beauty Department yet? It’s one of my favorite new beauty blogs — and I love me a good beauty blog.

I spotted their temporary pastel hair idea, which is on-trend with two big Spring 2012 looks: pastels, and temporary hair color. In fact, pastel hair was seen a lot on the Spring 2012 runways — like from Thakoon and Peter Som — in addition to pastels on clothes and nails. And let’s not forget stars like Katy Perry and Dianna Agron dying their hair in colorful hues lately.

You’ll never believe how to get the colorful pastel hair color (very temporary!) seen above. And no — Kool-Aid wasn’t involved.

It’s CHALK!

It’s actually not quite as simple as going through your kid’s chalk stash, and The Beauty Department spells out all of the DOs and DONTs very clearly. (Go read it before attempting on your own.) But once you have the right chalk (and you know whether or not to use water), it’s so easy.

And I think the end result is very pretty:

What do you think? Would you attempt chalking your hair, or is it a trend best left for teenagers? It’s certainly more subtle than the bright Kool-Aid hues from my youth.
