HEADER 8 New Baby Products Your Mom Has Never Heard of

Occasionally my mother-in-law will be amazed at some baby product I sort of took for granted. I thought it would be fun to do a post on baby items that  have been invented in the last ten years. My criteria was it had to be somethting that has been really innovative. (For example: no diaper bags on this list unless you can show me a diaper bag that actually changes the baby by itself.) While nothing on this list is essential (see proof all around us that you can raise kids without any of it) some of it is sure nice to have. Click through to see my list. What am I missing? Am I totally off?

Formula Dispenser
We used formula with my second child and this genius invention was a godsend. It measures out the amount of formula in advance for on the go or when you need to make the bottle quickly! (ie: baby is screaming.)
from Diapers.com $3.89

There is my list. I’d love to hear your feedback! What am I missing?

Cute list! I have to wonder what of these I would use in the future. But, a version of the clip-on high chair absolutely existed before ten years ago. If I didn’t use it, I know my little brothers did and they are 25 and 21 now.

Hi there Jordan! I think these are all great products having used most of them myself. I wanted to mention something rather new that my friend loved using this past year and I only wish I knew about it when I was nursing. It’s called the Utterly Yours Breast Pillow. http://www.mybreastpump.com/utterlyyoursbreastpillowpage.html It’s a pillow wedge that one can place under their breast to provide support for it while nursing, thus freeing up one hand. (If you’re one of those people with larger breasts and need extra lift). Anyway I wanted to mention that because I wish I had it and I think it’s genius!

Well, while the Aiden & Anais blanket is just a blanket…they are brilliant blankets. Great for swaddling, perfect for summer and winter, can work double duty as a burp cloth. I’m addicted to them. Clementine uses one every day.
Puj tub is brilliant. I own it. But if you don’t have the right sink, it’s worthless.
Also the OXO Sprout highchair. It grows with your child and can be used for kids up to 5 years. Plus, the design is tres chic.

Not a mom but I end up over here as a reader of your blog! Such cool products these days. The clip on high chair did exist 10 years ago because my mom had one back in the 80′s for me. It probably wasn’t as safe or sleek or comfortable…etc. haha

I definitely remember my parents having one of those table-seat things, at least with my little brother who is 15 now. We may have had it longer than that, but I’m not positive.

I had a friend who hated the Boppy, but for me it’s been absolutely essential! Other pillows work in a pinch, but the Boppy is seriously like having a couple extra arms. It’s super comfortable, I can be hands free if I need to be, and I’m still using it with my 15 month old. Totally worth the cost.

Two things:
I was constantly stopped by moms and grandmas whenever I used the shopping cart cover I bought on Etsy. It could be used on restaurant high chairs too. One of my most used and favorite baby products. Also, we used this a lot. http://www.summerinfant.com/Products/Eat/Bibbity/TinyDiner%C2%AE-in-Green.aspx

The two things my parents have been in awe of both relate to the bathroom –

1. Diaper sprayer -the kind that attaches to the toilet for easy rinsing of cloth diapers.

2. The built-in kid toilet seat – My father was so amazed by not having to have a separate kid ring just sitting on the floor that he bought my SIL one and one for his house. He thought it was ingenious to have it made just like and attached to the grown-up seat.

Interesting list. I LOVED my boppy and was happy to see it on here. I’m surprised there are no baby carriers, such the Ergo–I know carriers are not new, but the Ergo allows a backpack style without all the metal framework of other backpack child carriers. My parents were shocked by the number and variety of carriers I had.

I had one of those clip on high chairs as a baby….in the 80s

Those items are all great, but most of them have been around more than ten years. I’ve been a parent for 16 years. The formula dispenser was a lifesaver with my oldest. The sleepsac product is a minor modification and renaming of the classic bunting, a product so old it’s in a nursery rhyme. The latch on chair is at least 45 years old because my mother used one with my older brothers. Since my parents didn’t have the money to be buying the latest toys, I would guess those chairs are at least fifty years old. Lastly, the Boppy is closer to 20 years old. It is fun though to think of all the new products that have made parenting easier over the years.

Oh, I also love the Hooter Hider. Awesome invention! Definitely add that to your list.

Jen Hageman commented on Jan 04 12 at 7:30 pm

Great list! I have a 6-month old so I have used quite a few of these items. I agree with TONIASARAH about the Aiden and Anais blankets… they are my absolute fav! I will definitely be buying them as shower gifts for friends in the future. I did have a nursing pillow but rarely used it. I think it’s collecting dust in the basement now:)

Not sure if they are more or less than 10 years old, but this was CRITICAL when my little one wanted snacks on the go….http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3502348&fromWidget=BRU%3ACategory%3ATop+Sellers
They may be a ‘silly little thing’ but I can’t imagine car rides without them (or the number of Cheerios that would have been all over my car without them!)

the clip on high chairs definitely existed before 10 years ago. my baby sister (born in 1990) sat in one. it’s great, i always wonder why more people don’t use them. makes more sense than a separate chair.

jen commented on Jan 06 12 at 3:42 pm

Weren’t the bumbo and the clip on chair on a list of recalled items? I had the clip-on chair for my 30 year old daughter.

jean commented on Jan 06 12 at 5:09 pm

I got a boppy and it did nothing for nursing. My husband loved it and used it all the time tho (just for holding, not nursing) and my baby girl loves to lie in it as she got older.

Lauren commented on Jan 06 12 at 6:52 pm

I bought one of those clip on chairs 16 years ago. But I think that they were pretty well unknown then.

heidi commented on Jan 06 12 at 11:27 pm

The squeeze pouches of baby food are definitely my favourite. (For parents who make their own baby food, there are a few similar products, one being a spoon by Boon that you fill with puree and squeeze out. http://www.booninc.com/products/Squirt/852 And just to add a comment about Aden & Anais (the whole product line is amazing) – their bibs are spectacular, and their Dream blanket is my toddler’s favourite. Although they are nothing new (muslin has been used on babies for centuries), having these classic items readily available pretty much everywhere is great.

Jordan, I LOVE the new baby things! Stuff I missed or couldn’t afford as a mom, I can now play with as a Nonni! My babies out-smarted our version of the clip-on high chair, although I notice that the one here has clamps, a vast improvement. Ours worked purely on leverage and the babies learned to push up on the underside of the table/counter and push themselves out into space where gravity exerted its irresistible attraction. When I dragged out my old one recently, the picky parents of my grandchildren screamed in horror and made me throw it out! Sigh. Fun article!

the clip on highchair definitely existed more than 10 years ago – i know because my little sister had one when she was a baby and she is now 26 years old! i agree with all the products you listed – i haven’t tried the puj tub yet, but have been wanting to.
