hair10 What Do You Think of the Feather Hair Extensions Trend?
Earlier this week I had some mom friends over for some post-bedtime beer and bbq, and conversation turned to the recent trend of adding feather hair extensions to long ladies ‘dos. Celebrities from Hillary Duff to Steven Tyler have been rocking the feather hair extension look and we’ve rounded up pics. Most of the moms in attendance were not in favor of this look. I told them I would put it to you ladies for a vote. Check out a slideshow of the feather hair extensions look after the jump, then let us know what you think in the comments…

Meh. Like any other kind of accessory, they can be done well or poorly. I kind of like having 1 or 2 in a more subtle way to draw the eye, but more than 3-4 look just silly.

I like the look, but only with the skinny long ones that are places in the bottom or side of your hair. I also don’t think it should be longer than your hair. Subtle is best.

I love the look! I think it’s fun for summer. I have three girls, 10, 11, 13 and they all have them. I had one too, before I chopped all my hair off.

i think they look amazing, but i also don’t think they’re for everyone. i don’t know if i could pull them off myself. i guess it depends on how easy they are to use. but i am all in favor of feathers in people’s hair. i like the big formal feather sprays that have become popular for updos. i think the color and pattern of the feathers really adds interest.

alicia commented on Jun 30 11 at 3:01 pm

I personally like them and I let my 9 year old wear them and make them and create. It’s just an accessory. As long as you don’t over do it.

la commented on Jun 30 11 at 9:14 pm

I personally don’t like them. Unless you want to look like a native American I think they just look odd. Unless you have a crazy hair-do like the blue-bird it looks fun, but not for everyday use. My brothers girlfriend tinsels and feathers her hair and she asked me the other day if my hair was real. It’s long and goes to my lower back and completely natural. I think it’s just another media plow to make the everyday natural beauties over looked for the artificial hair/feather wearing girls.

I think they are cute but I heard that animals are being severely abused to “grow” the feathers. Big turn off for me.

I think its best if this stays with kids… I personally don’t like the trend but I know I couldn’t pull it off..

Kelsey commented on Jul 01 11 at 1:33 pm

I have five thin, neutral-colored feathers clustered under the length of my hair, and I like them very much. Even if I only have time for jeans, a nursing tank, and some flops, my feathers are always there to give me a little style boost. :)

Danielle commented on Jul 01 11 at 6:37 pm

I was the one at the BBQ who voted for feather’s in my kids hair!!!! My kid is just too cute and thinks these are so cool…at age 5.

mackicayloma commented on Jul 03 11 at 3:54 am

I would love to have feather extensions but do not know how much it is to have and have no clue where a good place is to get it done here in Oklahoma!

Kristyn F commented on Jul 06 11 at 12:33 am

this trend is stupid…i would never do it…whats the point of letting ur kids have it? to show them ….the kids these days are growing up very bad…bullying some kids for not having good hair …good clothes all that bs stuff…my daughter was bullied because she didn’t do anything with her hair or her clothes…and she is super skinny…she only weighs 60pounds and is 10.5 years old…so wrong…we need to change our girls into thinking they don’t need these colors for good looks they have that on the inside…<3

Oh and did anyone inform any of you that it is animal abuse these bird are alive when they PLUCK these feathers out of them ,, I think this FAD IS SICK and nasty ..it isnt like a little tug most people dont like it when you pull their hair well it is 100 times worst then you pull a feather out of a Bird oh and then they kill them ,,You all should be ashamed of yourselfs
Oh P.S I work with birds and have had to do DNA tests on them which mean pulling out a feather and they scream when it is done and I hated doing it cause i know it hurts

Beth commented on Jul 06 11 at 12:57 am

I think they are cute till everyone and their dog starts getting them… Then they just arent so appealing… My sister has had them since April and when she got them I loved them but never got them. Now I think since everyone has seen her and are getting them there is no way im going to get them…

Cheyenne commented on Jul 06 11 at 12:57 am

It’s not a new trend. I did this in the late 80′s and early 90′s. It’s a trend they come and they go.

Adriana commented on Jul 06 11 at 1:08 am

Sad for the birds. Yeah fashion.

Val commented on Jul 06 11 at 2:24 am

I’ve always loved changing up my hair so I love it. It’s fun for the summer and its only an extension so you can take it out whenever you want. I’ve been rocking my feathers for 2 months now. I’ve tried all sorts of colors. Next hair trend i’ll be trying is ombre. So sadly i’ll be removing my feathers.

elvina commented on Jul 06 11 at 2:25 am

You can get them at famousfeathers.com they have the tools, feathers and installation beads so you can do it yourself and its waaayy cheaper than going to a salon.

heather commented on Jul 06 11 at 8:57 am

I have a few and love them. I echo Danielle in the sentiment that they add a little style when you are a mess. ;)

Liz commented on Jul 06 11 at 9:26 am

i think fethers are cute i have 28 in my hair it looks asome

ava commented on Jul 11 11 at 4:03 pm

The extensions look beautiful, but birds are slaughtered for their feathers just like mammals for their fur. The feathers used are very similar to those harvested for fly fishing, mostly coming from the saddle feathers of roosters. If you like the trend, look into cruelty-free options.

good work…and i my personal opinion you have best collection of feather hair extension..Some nice collection is also availble on fashion blog..

riakhan commented on Jul 18 11 at 5:11 am

I love them but agree that little goes a long way… they are a trend but give a cute style and flavor to a bad hair day… as far as the birds go, they were being used for fishing lures before that so just b/c you aren’t putting them in your hair don’t think that they weren’t still going to “hurt” the birds for them

Natasha commented on Jul 18 11 at 6:10 pm

…I found mine at ostrich.com…and I absolutely love them!

doyoulikemypartyhair commented on Jul 26 11 at 3:22 pm

I work at a salon and I love the feather extensions, I have multiple in my hair. I think the feathers add a fun flirty style to young woman and just a cute fun style for younger girls. I did the research and I understand that birds are being “hurt” for these feathers but as ‘doyoulikemypartyhair’ commented, long before people started wearing the feathers in their hair, fly fishers were using them as bait and peacock feathers were used as home decor, feathers will be used no matter what so why not add a little style to an otherwise boring hair style. I mean if you like being boring that’s all fine and good, it’s your hair but that doesn’t mean you have harass everyone else who likes fashion and style.

Sadie commented on Jul 28 11 at 6:18 pm

I think feathers are cute; however, I am not one of those people that follow the crowd. Almost everyone I know has one in their hair, so that turned me off. They are super cute though but just like any other trend it will wear off.

Maggie commented on Aug 06 11 at 6:36 pm

I think these are so cute. Considering I’m 15 and I love trying something new. It’s a thin feather not a huge peacock feather. I really want one just to see what it is like. I really don’t know anyone who has tried this except my younger sister who is 12. She got a big feather in her hair and it looks almost fake. I rather have the thin ones with the stripes then a arts and crafts looking feather. Anyways i don’t see what the big problem is with these things. They are unique and it let’s girls show there not afraid to be different. Unless they are copying others. So I’m half and half on this trend. Even though I want one :)

Jessie commented on Aug 17 11 at 10:51 pm

I think they look awesome when done right. I do them for people I know, as well as extensions. I am not sure who uses real feather, but i use REAL HAIR died or natural colors. If you take care of them and know how to wash and care for them they last a very long time.
My girlfriend has about 100+ extensions and 20 in a different colors. Best thing is to think first, check the color and quality before doing anything. I am no fan of the glued, hot waxed or fused ones at all. The fair is not a place to have it done.

Keith commented on Aug 22 11 at 11:52 am

I really like the look and just ordered some pink ones to put in myself. I am only going to use synthetic ones though because I do not approve of the cruelty to the birds.

Emily commented on Aug 29 11 at 2:01 pm

Ps.
LOVE the “bluebird” look!! :)

Emily commented on Aug 29 11 at 2:02 pm

I have been making feather hair clips for Years!! I Love the Crimp beads attachment, very cool. I can now charge more money for what I have been doing for years because of the Trend! Remember to get Quality Feathers that are clean and strong from a reliable source.
