My, What a Cute… Litter Box!?
Cats are great, but there’s no getting around the fact that they come with a box of poop that sits somewhere in your house. Gross. If you have to have a litter box (and you do, unless you have one of those genius toilet-flushing cats), why not at least make it attractive?
These litter boxes by ModKat are actually pretty cute. Here’s an introduction to the way a they work.
It comes at a premium price (just under $200), but it does seem like a smart solution to an ugly problem. What do you think? Would your cats use it? Would you mind seeing it in your home? Or is a litter box a litter box, no matter what cute shape and color it is?
Love this — or think it’s over the top? These celebrities who treat their pets as children wouldn’t think so!

nikki commented on Jun 28 11 at 12:13 amI think this is a great idea! I love my kitties, but have never been able to find a good solution to the litter box issue. This is pretty much exactly what I’ve been looking for! The only problem is, I just cant justify spending nearly $200 on a box that doesn’t even scoop the box for you. I hope it well go down in price some…
rich commented on Jun 29 11 at 1:31 pmIt is actually $180 and we are offering a $20 discount now that brings it down to $160.
SPECIAL DISCOUNT for our awesome twitter followers! For $20 off of a ModKat use code: mk20twitter on checkout. 2 weeks only.
It really is a quality product that reduces the litter tracking tremendously.
Cheers!
Kerry commented on Jun 30 11 at 1:45 amCool idea but i dont know if my cat would enjoy climbing down into a cave to do her business…
AM commented on Jun 30 11 at 2:06 amIs there any kind of guarantee if your cats wont use it? Love the idea bt would hatre to spend $160 even only to find out cats wont use it
Amy commented on Jun 30 11 at 6:23 amI agree whole heartedly. This is an awesome box, but there is no way I could spend $160 on a litter box. I’ve also considered the self-cleaning box, but won’t buy that because of the price either.
Maybe once it’s been around a while, the price will come down so common folk can afford it, too. :(
rich commented on Jun 30 11 at 7:24 pmThere is a 30 day return policy.
Katie commented on Jul 02 11 at 6:55 amInteresting. I don’t own cats, but I don’t think I’d be able to spend even $160 on a litter box. It is an attractive litter box though.
erin commented on Jul 02 11 at 12:24 pmI thought the same thing…but I hate litter, so I caved and bought it. AND we love having it. My cats love it too. Cats like privacy by nature, so this gives them that.
I don’t like that it doesn’t come with a second liner for the price that you pay, because the one we have is ripping from the cats covering up their business. And that the plastic lid is breaking after just a year, but I love the box anyway.
It looks so much better than a box of cat business just sitting there. So, Rich, from the other comments, if you have a deal on more liners and ever replace the lids, you let me know. Thanks! I love the product and tell everyone about it.
EvY commented on Jul 02 11 at 11:27 pmI have this litter box. I considered ikea hacking something to hide our other litter box but this was on sale for $160 and I went for it. Not only is it not offensive looking, it looks like a harmless cube, it helps a LOT with litter containment since the cats enter from the top. It took my cats all of 20 minutes to use it and they dont seem to mind it. As a bonus, I have two dogs as well as a 1 year old niece running and having it top entering eliminates curious babies and curious pooches playin in there. If you hate your litter box, just go for this one. The cost won’t feel bad after you realize the advantages.
Kimber commented on Jul 03 11 at 1:44 pmThis idea has been around for a long time. A year ago I bought a cute rubbermaid tub at target for $7, cut a hole in the lid and now it’s a cute and functional litterbox for under $10
Courtney commented on Jul 03 11 at 4:17 pmWe just adopted two new cats so now we have a total of four. It says that each cat probably needs their own litter box and I imagine that’s the case since the kitten seems to take up most of the room in that photo. If it’s $180 each I would have to spend $720… no thanks! Nicole, have you ever blogged about your system? We have a booda dome litter box but I think we need two. It’s just a matter of where to put it! Also, I just found a really similar box on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Clevercat-Top-Entry-Litter-Box/dp/B0002ZS20I/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1309723933&sr=8-5
cd commented on Jul 05 11 at 11:46 amI’ve seen other top-entry boxes before at less cost. Sure, you can always make a more expensive version of a product! There’s nothing inherently expensive about this. (This is one of those times where I feel like I must be so much different than a target Babble reader. I mean, a $160 cat box? For realz? This is up there with the “bargain” outfit posts where the ensemble costs a mere $300. For a single outfit.)
I think it’s cute and I love great design. But it’s for cat sh*t and we’re in a down economy.
rich commented on Jul 05 11 at 1:49 pmErin,
We will certainly replace your lid if there is a problem with it, please contact us at http://www.modkat.com/pages/contact
Cheers!
