The Best Kids Bikes: WIN a Bike!
Have you checked out this year’s Babble Best: Kids Bike feature up on the main Babble.com page? I was lucky enough (or should I say my son was lucky enough) to do all of the testing, and we learned one important lesson:
Balance bikes are where it’s at.
And we’re offering you a chance to win one of your choice!
So many of the bikes featured in our “Best of” round-up are pedal-less bikes — which might seem silly. Yet after trying them myself, I could really see why these balance bike companies claim that training wheels are counterproductive. Sure kids learn how to pedal on tricycles, but that’s about it. Balance bikes (or “running bikes”), on the other hand, teach young toddlers and kids how to balance on two wheels, so they can correct themselves when the bike starts to slightly tilt. And because they have two feet on the ground, there’s less chances of falling or tipping — which could instill fear and a lack of confidence.
All of the balance bike companies claim to have kids learning to ride two-wheel bikes years sooner than if they’d used training wheels, and I can absolutely see why. In fact, our pick for “Best Overall” kids bike is the Wishbone Design 3-in-1 Balance Bike, which starts as a stable running tricycle for 1-year-old toddlers and transitions into a bigger two-wheel running bike for the next five years. Once kids learn the balance and coordination needed for bike riding, learning to pedal is a breeze.

Balance bikes are definitely the way to go… my oldest was balancing within 3 months when he turned 3 years old.. he is now 4 yrs. old and rides with pedals and NO TRAINING WHEELS! My niece and nephews are 5 and 6 yrs. old and still use their training wheels.

It’s hard to afford everything I know he’d physically or developmentally benefit from and/or all the things I know will bring him loads of excitement & health! I’m raising him alone from gestational age of 5 weeks:-(. It’s a huge
milestone that G-d willing will arrive in just 9.5
days! I mean him turning one! I was under alot of pressure to do what I couldn’t bear & I fought for his innocent life that resulted of sad & tragic & painful life event – with plan B of giving him life & if my family couldn’t accept the circumstances & his existence – to give him up for adoption to a family in dire desire of a child & financial stability & education – just no biological ability to have their own. Yes, it would be difficult, but this innocent life would not be wasted & I would have acted more responsibly than to just cover his bio-dad’s tracks & fill my conscious with guilt & hands with blood. So now we have spent almost a whole year together & I can’t say it’s easy & w/o different kinds of guilt or attachment hardships, but boy does he make me feel proud & him being alive brightens more lives than it darkens! He is insanely quick & clever learner & incredibly sweet (only looks like his bio-dad’s clone, but perhaps for a reason …). I feel stronger & more grown & responsible & needed & that my strength made tragedy have so far not a pointless & painful ending – but a purposeful start of a human life – no matter the odds! I made it 10 months w/o any child support; it’s just starting to kick in, but it’s still not possible for me to work @ the moment. I so would live for him to have a real 1st birthday
w/ gifts & good wishes & care free celebration & loads of pictures. Hope @ least things in my control I will accomplish, but if I’ll win this TYKE RIDER WISHBONE BIKE it will definitely become one of most used & appreciated toys he gets! There’ll be a lot of bonding times with mommy, grandpa & grandma! Those people are almost only relatives he has & even writing I can picture how many laughs & quality minutes will be shared:-))!
