New Beeni Baby Hat: Genius Invention or Dangerous Device?

I have to admit I imagined a product like this many times when my baby was younger. There’s nothing quite as stressful as frantically hunting for and wiping off a dropped pacifier while baby screams. But seeing it come to life, I’m not sure I could feel good about putting it on my baby’s head. What do you think? Would you use one? Find out more about this new invention after the jump…
This new product is called a Beeni Baby Hat. Its makers say:
“Eliminate the stress of searching for the pacifier after baby sneezes, yawns, or stretches with a beeni baby hat. This adorable little hat holds the pacifier securely near the baby’s mouth with soft, flexible straps. The safe, gentle design keeps the pacifier clean and nearby. The beeni baby hat is perfect for newborns and children up to two years old as they grow with it.”
It comes in a variety of colors and patterns and runs $24.99. The inventors say it is completely safe. Learn more about it and order one at beeni.net, and let us know what you think of it in the comments.

tara commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:26 pmIt kind of looks like a ball gag. I would rather use a paci leash that hooks to the baby’s shirt.
faye commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:30 pmno way. it looks like a muzzle. would NEVER use this with my child or give it to anyone as a gift. never mind the high pricetag
Jen commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:31 pmNot sure it is the safest thing to put on a baby. My kids are now 3 and 5 and both liked their binky very much. I think the egular binky leashes are much safer and keep binky within reach. How safe is this hat/ strap thing if the baby spits up? Looks wierd too.
Misty commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:39 pmSo when a baby spits up as they typically do, they will have the presence of mind to utilize the “break-away” feature to avoid choking on their own vomit? Blah. Let’s hope this one is yanked from the market BEFORE any babies die.
Sabrinia commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:42 pmI am thinking with that many strings it’s got to be a chocking hazard. I expect to see someone get hurt and this be recalled, I’d never use it. It’s not like searching for a binkie is that stressful, really.
Shannon commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:43 pmWHAT!?! Absolutely not. I agree with Faye – it looks like a muzzle…
foksal commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:47 pmhehehehe, Hannibal Lecter :))) good! good!
Luba commented on Apr 20 11 at 1:48 pmToo scary looking!! I use paci clips to keep the binky attached to my baby’s clothing so i dont have to deal with dropping binkys. This looks dangerous to put on a baby. I agree with the last comment, too much like a muzzle
Kelly commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:04 pmAbsolutely horrible!!! I would never use or buy anything like this.
Grace commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:05 pmI have often wished for something like this too, but I would not want one because I would be tempted to use it. There’s no way that’s safe!
Carrie commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:06 pmThis reminds me of the movie Silence of the Lambs. Very fitting I think.
emily commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:10 pmThat is so unsafe. What happens when the baby spits up and they can’t spit their paci out? Or even if baby just doesn’t want the paci in anymore? That’s some lazy, dangerous stuff right there.
Kendra commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:23 pmNo way! I just made a binky clip that works just as good if they don’t want it in than you still can find it and no clean up. I did not how ever keep it on when she slept.
Andy Chorney commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:47 pmYou have got to be kidding. No fricking way. That looks like a torture device. Sometimes baby wants to spit binky, that’s what they do. That is horrible.
Elizabeth Sharpe commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:49 pmI would say (not from experience yet!) that keeping the pacifier close by and clean could easily be obtained by the clips that they have come out with. I don’t think I could use this on my child, or gift it.
I can’t help the image in my head of a child on one of the harnesses with one of these on their heads. I mean… come on!!! A leash and a muzzle. Fantastic.
Anna commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:50 pmSorry to be off topic, but something that’s been driving me nuts about Babble is that you say “find out more after the jump”. The jump is diff for everyone, and we know how to scroll. (And many don’t know WTH “the jump” is anyway). Plus anyone viewing on a mobile device finds it even more pointless…how many “jumps” does it take to get to your version of the “jump” on an iPhone. We aren’t all on 800 x 600 anymore at a CRT.
Diff browsers and toolbars installed at the top make the “jump” lower for people as well.
As far the beeni thing, why get your child SO dependent on a paci?
SheShe commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:50 pmFor one thing, it doesn’t look right at all. I don’t think this would be safe, because what if the baby vomits? He/She will choke on it. It is also not good for forming gums. The baby will be even more dependent on the binky, by always having it in his/her mouth. The baby wouldn’t be able to yawn or coo, or even breathe right when he/she is sick. This is no good.
Corrie commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:53 pmIt honestly looks inhumane! Who in their right mind would strap that across their childs face. It looks like something a lazy parent would buy so they would have to get up and find the bink after a “sneeze or cough”, …just my honest opinion
Ruby commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:53 pmLooks like something you strap on a vicious dog.
allison commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:53 pmNo way. What about when the baby doesn’t want the stimuli from sucking anymore.doesn’t look like they can spit it out. Plus it can’t be good for teeth it being stuck in there. Use a pacifier leash, much safer
Desiree commented on Apr 20 11 at 2:55 pmWhat happens if the baby throws up? Wouldn’t it choke on vomit?
Nicole2011 commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:01 pmNOOOO WAY…are you serious? Thats why they have those pacifier clips that attatch to the childs clothes so if they do spit out the pacifier its still attatched to them but not stuck in their mouth. Its like those harnesses. WHo the heck puts those on thier child? ONly people who are too lazy to put their child in a stroller or actually watch them. You look like your walking a dog, not watching your kid. WOW ANyone who actually has a thought about using one of those those beeni baby things needs to rethink that. Its rediculous. and cant be too safe. I cant believe anyone even thought about inventing one of those!!
Amber commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:01 pmI agree – it looks like a muzzle and I would never consider buying this. At what point are we just going to accept that babies actually require significant amounts of our personal time, attention, and effort? I’m all about easing stress and not making more work for yourself than necessary, and we’ve all nodded in agreement and chuckled at the suggestion of adhering a pacifier with duct tape, but honestly sometimes I wonder if the great amount of products like this showing up is a sad testament to how detached we are becoming from our babies.
Lorraine commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:02 pmI’m not that lazy that I couldn’t pick up a pacifier after my baby drops it repeatedly. I’m jut glad none of my kids took them. And what if they have this device on and your driving and can’t see them in the backseat. Are little babies strong enough to push this out of there mouth with there tongue? What if they spit up alot? Will this cause them to choke?
Alissa commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:05 pmAlthough I have definitely wished for something to keep the pacifier in my 2 month old daughter’s mouth, I would not use this product. It looks creepy and I am not convinced it is safe. What if the baby throws up/spits up a large amount? I think I will just stick to dealing with the minor inconvenience of having to find, wash, and replace the paci.
Makaela commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:11 pmA. If you can think of “nothing quite as stressful” as searching for a pacifier while your baby’s crying, you have bigger issues than that lost pacifier.
B. Those clips mentioned above by Elizabeth should do the job just fine, if you must have something. That way if they want to spit it out, they can.
This invention almost seems like a way to force feed these smile-altering security-suckers that no child should “NEED” in the first place. Weening a 2-year old off of a pacifier is a difficult and ridiculous process.
Heather commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:25 pmI cannot even IMAGINE using this! There’s no way it can possibly be safe. What happens if a baby spits up, or worse, vomits, with this thing strapped on? Where’s it going to go? That’s right – right back down the throat or worse… My son spits his out in his sleep because he knows, somehow, that he doesn’t need it anymore. This contraption prevents babies from learning that. I’ve often groped around in the middle of the night looking for his binky but there’s no way in he-double-L I’d even consider this!!
Anne commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:33 pmI think there’s a reason a baby spits out his pacifier. At that instant, the baby wants to push the pacifier out of his mouth (he’s not so good at planning ahead: now I don’t have my binkie! Waaaa!). Thwarting baby’s intentions is NOT going to make him happy, and he will let you know.
Jennifer H. commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:34 pmMaybe if the clip was just on one side, it’d be ok… but two looks like a suffocation hazard and a way to force the passie on the child, which I also don’t like.
Anne commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:35 pmNo way would I ever use this! I agree with other posts that it’s like a muzzle! It’s just another product that is not only dangerous but shows how lazy as society that we have become. Really just pick up the pacifer and clean it off. Children require attention and care we can’t rely on “devices” to do what we can easily do!
I also couldn’t imagine a parent keeping a hat on their child for very long. A child can easily over heat. The only time it could be used is outside in the dead of winter. Dangerous and a waste of money! There’s my two cents on the contraption.
heather commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:38 pmhow guilty would you feel if your baby spit-up and choked because their passy was “attached” to their face?! it’s just not worth the risk in my opinion!!!
Jen Lyric commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:38 pmI think this is wierd! What if the baby (for lack of a better word) barfs, where does that go? back in?? I would never put a baby through that. Let’s actually take care of a baby and not rely on muzzles to do it for us
Becky commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:45 pmFirst thought: Hannibal Lechter
Second thought: Does that say “Beer”?
Concerned Mother commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:47 pmI dont like it. It looks like a baby could be strangled with it. Yea I know you never let a chile go to sleep with something with straps on it, but what about when walking or in a car? isnt that the time you would use it? It would only take a few seconds for that to harm an infant, and they cant inform you in any way something in that manor is wrong.
meme commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:50 pmlooks like you are gagging the poor child like a kidnap victim!
liss commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:50 pmdo you seriously want to create a child that dependent on a paci? When it falls out it stays out .. learnt that the hard way .. have seen ppl stick 10 pacis’ in a crib so their kid could self soothe .. yeah right .. each to their own ..
Brianne commented on Apr 20 11 at 3:53 pmI’m putting this hat in the same category as the baby monkey leash. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. It makes my heart ache to see items like these.
Wendy commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:03 pmmy concern is not what it looks like, but rather what happens if a baby spits up…I don’t think it has ANYTHING at all to do with being detached. My precious son just turned 10 months old, and he HATES riding in his carseat. He will cry and cry until we reach our destination. He now does great holding his pacifier in his mouth, and I keep it on a clip, however when he was first born, he would always spit it out, not quite having the hang of keeping it in. Something like this would have been wonderful, however, like I said in the beginning, I would be worried about him spitting up and not being able to spit it out when needed. I also don’t think the clip is that great at keeping the pacifier clean once the baby starts to crawl. I’ve watched my son drag his pacifier across the floor and I have to wash it even though it was on the clip. So, I see pros and cons to this device. But for me, if I 100% KNEW it was safe, I would have loved this for my son.
Jessica Welch commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:05 pmOk, we’ve all thought of this (including plain old duct tape), but none of us actually did it! I think I dislike this as much as Walking Wings. Just do the work yourself (meaning pick up the paci, clean it off, etc). No one said being a mom was a cake walk of baby products that did the job for you.
Hope commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:18 pm*DISLIKE* I think this is AWFUL! What if it is choking or (don’t) heaven forbid (want) his paci? It is too dangerous and to confining, and I agree, you should just get a clip on if you worry about losing yours. This just seems WRONG to me. Even looking at it makes me feel weird. I would DEFINITELY NOT buy one for my child or anyone elses, or even for a dog. Once again *DISLIKE*
Christina commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:36 pmThis frightens me. For so many reasons.
Sara commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:46 pmI would never, never use this product at all. First of all it looks like your gagging the poor child, and second if my child don’t want her pacifier I’m not going to force her to keep it in her mouth. I can’t see how that is safe at all. What if your baby spits up and cant spit the pacifier out of her mouth.
Chastity commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:53 pmNot sure of anyone else but my daughter often gag’d on pacifiers so I see this as a HUGE choking hazard! Someone needs to try it out on the inventor!!! Its a muzzle for a child for crying out loud!
Liz commented on Apr 20 11 at 4:53 pmI’m going to be the odd one out and say this would have been awesome if i knew about this when my son was a baby. Because of his cleft lip and palate he wasn’t able to keep anything in his mouth. We used medical tape..loosely…to keep his in his mouth.
It’s the only way he would sleep……
for a ‘normal’ baby, i would not use this.
Cindy commented on Apr 20 11 at 5:25 pmI about peed myself when I read Becky’s comment, LOL! No, wouldn’t use it.
Jennifer Wilsey commented on Apr 20 11 at 6:00 pmthere is no way I would ever use that on my baby. I am gasping for air for that poor baby. I ‘d be afaird of obstructing their breathing. And for some parents who may not know any better may use it on a fussy infant with a stuffy nose or who is congested with a cold. I know that pacifiers may drop out of a babies mouth due to all of the above(yawning sneezing, etc) but they also know when they’ve had enough of it or need a good breath of air through their mouth.Let our babies at least have a choice to spit that thing out!! They are there own llitle people too :) and I’d also be afarid the strap would get tangled around their neck. I am actually terrifed of this “inventive” baby product.
Wendy Hawkinson commented on Apr 20 11 at 6:15 pmWhat if that baby spits up? I wouldn’t buy or SELL that product–it’s dangerous!
Rachel commented on Apr 20 11 at 6:49 pmAnd what happens when the baby spits up?
Debbie commented on Apr 20 11 at 8:07 pmIt’s pretty much forcing the binky on them. If they don’t want it, LET THEM SPIT IT OUT, don’t tie it to their head! My little guy liked his binky to a degree for the first few months but eventually decided he didn’t like anymore it by 6 months. In some ways I’m glad he stopped on his own, with this little contraption he would have kept accepting it without really wanting it and then he would get used to it and keep it longer, making it harder to take away later.
Marcy commented on Apr 20 11 at 8:14 pmNO WAY, this is unsafe and inhumane!
Kerry commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:02 pmI would use one, AFTER altering the design. The way it is now, simply put, is an asphyxiating on spit-up hazard waiting to happen.
Jess Guest commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:05 pmDitto all the above comments. I always have a clean pacifier with a cover on it tucked into my bra (less “endowed” people may choose to use their pocket, but bra works for me) when I have a baby who uses one (I am currently pregnant with my sixth, so we have been doing this for a while.) Give baby the fresh paci, find the “lost” one, wash and cap it and put it in my bra – voila! Problem solved. No torture devices or potential choking hazards needed. I have a sneaking suspicion this is a late April Fool’s joke, surely nobody would seriously BUY this?
Chrissy commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:43 pmWhats wrong with this???? …. Ummmmm What happens if the baby spits up? It looks like a muzzle and a crappy way to keep your kids quiet and it just looks down right cruel. Ive seen people with shoe laces tied in the binky holes to keep the binky in the mouth! .. Its sickening!
Carry extra binkys with you, use the binky clip, if your baby’s spitting the binky out like my kids did THEY DONT WANT IT!!!! I had 2 kids who weren’t and aren’t binky babies. Grow up!
cindy s commented on Apr 20 11 at 9:46 pmOmg…really this is such a safety hazard, morally inhumane, and a idiotic idea. So the inventor of this product has to be one sorry lazy piece of crap that just wants their kid to be silent and a fake baby doll. Why would, no how could anyone ever even think about using this on their child. This product should immediately be banned from production. My child has gerd and i would never strap anything in his face just because I didnt want to chase down his paci. its called a paci leash product inventor. Not a paci gag. Really take care of your child dont figure out how to hold them down.
Megg commented on Apr 20 11 at 10:40 pmHorrifying! It makes me anxious just looking at it!
lindsey v commented on Apr 21 11 at 1:11 pmjust plain retarded to invent that devise,,get off your butts who ever invented it and take care of your lil one yourself,if it was so inconvient to pick up a passy and wash it off then your cleary not one to have children in the first place,,granted you prolly thought it was a great idea, but did you seriously think that us MOTHERS that take pride in holding and doing for our children would actually buy that dangerous thing, how stupid do you think us mothers realy are,,,stop trying to make money on something to get rich fast,,and for people that allowed this to go through as a OKAY..PRODUCT in safty you should be ashamed of yourselfs, hello babys spit up and gage on it,and if they cant get a passy out of there mouths the baby dont stand a chance unless someone notices theres something wrong,,what ever im done on this topic its just plain ignorance..and laziness…i will never buy something so horrible, and that is asence of cruelty..not being hostile or any of that just stating my opinions and how i feel about this product.i know that the product is not a product of babble,,im just babbling it out lol,,
Sarah Stewart commented on Apr 21 11 at 7:14 pmRecall it and recall it NOW!! Spit up and colds. Enough said.
Sherry Mauritz commented on Apr 25 11 at 12:40 amI’m Sorry I don’t think its the best thing, they can choke on thier spit up or some babies puke a lot due to gerd…I would not be very comfortable with it :/
ashley commented on Apr 25 11 at 12:50 ami would never use this with my baby. there has been many times that he has spit up coughed and yawned among other things that he needs to open his mouth for and if he had that on he would gag and choke i think this is dangerous and it should be taken off shelves!!!!
Chasity commented on Apr 25 11 at 1:17 amMy 1st child was born nearly 4 years ago, and shortly after his birth there was a story in the local news about a daycare worker who duct taped a pacifier into a toddler’s mouth and locked it in a dark bathroom. This looks like a similar idea. If you’re too lazy to deal with the dramas of pacifier use, don’t use them! And, while many people have mentioned the hazards related to an infant not being able to spit out their pacifier when they spit up, what about one who can’t breathe through their nose because of a cold? This is not a safe product!
bee74 commented on Apr 25 11 at 1:56 amit looks like some one beening lazy not right
Dee commented on May 13 11 at 12:48 amforgive me but there is no way i would put that on my baby, say the child rolls over on its face or is stopped up, it cuts off the oxygen supply. babys need a way to get them out of their mouth if needed. that scares me.
Fabiana commented on May 13 11 at 10:41 amRidiculous! I would never buy anything like this.
Marshelle commented on Jun 07 11 at 11:09 pmJust showed this to my family to laugh about it. We clicked on the product link and what do we find? Lo and behold, a product recall notice. Apparently the recall is for 35 units–I guess that only 35 parents were willing to try this.
SR commented on Jul 23 11 at 12:13 pmKahn Enterprises Recalls Beeni Baby Hats Due to Asphyxiation Hazard
YAY! Good riddance to such a horrible product! I can’t believe anyone would even think it is a good idea!!
anonymous commented on Oct 25 11 at 9:40 pmwhat an idiot..what if the baby vomited? what if you put it to bed with this torture thing on…and the baby developed a stuffed nose and needed to breath through its mouth? whoever invented it is obviously a lazy parent.
Tina L commented on Nov 06 11 at 11:01 amThis hat should only be used SUPERVISED by adults in order to teach the baby not to spit out pacifier (when baby learns to use the pacifier)
My twins would spit out their pacifiers and while my daughter was ok without one my son was not able to relax and fall asleep – especially during the day and we simply did not know what else to do! he fell asleep ok with rocking but then it was not ok (25 minutes! rocking 3 minutes sleeping) it was VERY difficult… when he was 7 1/2 months old G-d put the following idea in my head:
I took elastic that can be used in clothes and tied it to his pacifier so the
elastic went around his head. I watched him (while he was awake and alert) and saw he was sucking on the pacifier and then removed all and gave him a pacifier with no elastic. I did that a few times and THANK G-D he learned to take the pacifier. there may have been one or 2 times I left him to sleep with the elastic band pacifier but it during a day nap when I was awake and near by.
It was really a miracle after that he was able to calm down relax and fall asleep.
The above hat should only be used for that purpose (teaching baby to take pacifier) and only supervised – i.e. during day time when an adult is around all the time while the baby is “training” .
When someone said – wow such a good idea you should market it I replied- too dangerous! While I did it at an older age (did not think of it before) and supervised it is too dangerous to manufacture something like that that surely would be used by some without proper supervision
