World’s Greatest Sandbox

Scarlet recently turned three, and her aunt Stevee (who blogs all about my soon-to-be-born nephew over at Babble’s Being Pregnant) sent her this sandbox. That’s Scarlet’s actual sandbox, pictured in our driveway in the backyard. I love it so much I had to tell you about it. Why am I so enamored of it? Because my child can spend – I timed it – 40 minutes playing by herself in complete and utter peace and silence. FORTY MINUTES?? I speak the truth.
The other reason I love it? We have a cat. Cats don’t see a difference between litter boxes and sandboxes. This particular sandbox has an amazing trick – those benches fold down into a cover! Check out pics of how it works after the jump, and find out what it costs (less than you think) and where to buy it after the jump…

So magical! The benches fold into a lid! Another hidden benefit of the bench/lid is that your kid sits on the bench instead of in the sand, which means less sand to brush off of tiny bums. I assembled it myself with a screwdriver in about 20 minutes, and we picked up sand at Toys R Us. It says it needs 750 pounds of sand, but it was overflowing at 550 just FYI. Love it. It’s called the Badger Basket Covered Convertible Cedar Sandbox with Two Bench Seats, it costs $132, and you can find it here on Amazon.

cori commented on Apr 14 11 at 7:21 pmI love this sandbox! ive had my eye on it for a while on amazon, ive only hesitated because a few of the reviews says is small… what do you think could 2-3 kids play comfortably in the box? (im glad you posted, i was about to build my own and I think this would be just as economical and WAY eaiser!)

They beg to play in it. Yes, it’s messy, but seriously? It’s not hard to get out the vacuum after having time to watch your kids play happily. I sit on the porch and read while they are busy, busy, busy.
Jaime Morrison Curtis commented on Apr 15 11 at 2:25 pmi think 4 kids would be the limit – they’d fit on the benches with their feet in the box – not all four inside the box.
Vanessa Pool commented on Apr 18 11 at 6:01 pmHow much should I budget for sand? And where is best place to get sand? Are there different types to consider?
