While there is, of course, a religious basis to Fat Tuesday, the U.S. Mardi Gras celebration has become more about parties and get-togethers — beads and masks — which naturally leads to the classic tradition of eating rich, fatty foods to prepare for Lent. (Where there’s alcohol, there’s fatty foods.)

But regardless of “Fat Tuesday,” some families are just really into celebrating Mardi Gras — whether they travel down to New Orleans or have a big party at home. And while Mardi Gras isn’t always appropriate for kids, there are more family-friendly celebrations popping up.
