This handmade clay project is shockingly easy, and it makes the perfect Valentine’s Day ornament. Plus, the homemade clay recipe is great to have on-hand for rainy and snowy days.
Continue reading for step-by-step directions:
You will need:
- Homemade clay (recipe below)
- Baking sheet
- Cooking spray
- Zip-close plastic bag
- Marker
- Butter knife
- Pencil
- Yarn
1. Have your children help make the clay (by following the recipe below). Then have your kids work together to flatten the red clay on a greased baking sheet so the clay is one to two inches thick.
2. Draw a large heart on the clay with a marker, then cut out the heart shape with a butter knife.
3. Next, your kids can decorate the heart by forming small letters, shapes or designs with the purple clay and pressing them gently into the surface of the heart.
4. When they’re done, make a hole at the top of the heart with a pencil so that you can loop a string through it later for displaying.
5. Bake the heart for 30 to 40 minutes at 300 degrees F until the exterior of the dough has formed a crust.
Recipe for homemade clay:
You’ll need:
- 1.5 cups of salt
- 4 cups of flour
- 1.5 cups of water
1. Mix the salt and flour with a spoon in a bowl.
2. Add water gradually.
3. When doug forms, knead it well, adding water if it’s too crumbly and flour if it’s too sticky. It should be a firm consistency.
4. Divide the clay into two bowls.
5. Mix in red food coloring to one bowl.
6. Mix in blue and red food coloring (to make purple) to the other bowl.
