The Return of the Cashmere Cardigan
Thanks to summer camp, my daughter recently discovered, and fell in love with, Grease—the original High School Musical as far as I’m concerned. We downloaded it as a rental onto my iPad and she watched it a few times on the long plane ride to Athens. (“Grease to Greece,” as she said.) It might be revisiting this classic of my youth, plus the Mad Men frenzy, but I have been thinking a lot about the fifties influence in fashion. Specifically cashmere cardigans. (I own a few from the 1950′s that belonged to my mother, and they have been in a steady rotation in my wardrobe for the last 20 years.)
I just love the classic, simple and chic look of a cashmere cardigan, not to mention the versatility. They look great with jeans, dresses and skirts—and I’ve always been an advocate of wearing one backwards for an alternative look. So when I saw this video for the cashmere collection at Lord and Taylor on Taxi TV, I was completely smitten. The catchy tune and rockabilly-inspired styling totally charmed me. But what I loved most was the fact that the cashmere cardigan was being celebrated. You might say I felt a stylistic synergy of sorts. So much so that as soon as I got home, before unpacking my suitcase filled with summer clothes, I went through my stack of sweaters and started to plot some Fall ensembles featuring my cashmere cardigans.
