Checklist for Newborns: Bottle. Blanket. Bikini?
Baby’s first itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny bikini?!? I saw these in a baby boutique and at first glance, I thought it was a decorative item for the home or perhaps, a silly costume for a small dog. I inspected the package a bit closer and realized this tiny bikini is indeed made for babies.
I chuckled and asked the salesperson if she sells a lot of them. She said it’s a very popular baby shower gift, but some women don’t buy them because they don’t want to give the new daddy a heart attack. Good thinking.
The company who makes these infant-sized swimsuits is called Babi-Kini. They also make one piece swimsuits and sunshirts for girls too. The company says what “started out as a gag gift for a few business associates has turned into a thriving business.” I know moms who would laugh and think these suits are the funniest thing ever and I know moms would be mortified at the notion of putting a baby in a skimpy, sexy bikini. I guess you’ve gotta know your customers.
They don’t just cater to newborns – ouch, that’s awkward – because they sell up to size X-Large which is 6 to 7 years old. Maybe you can postpone dad’s heart attack for a few years? What do you think?
