main1 300x288 The Best of Auntie and Me CoutureI have to brag. My son Julian has the most amazing aunt in the world. Not only is she an amazing sister, but also an amazing business partner. In fact, she is the reason I would consider have a second child even though I’m quite happy with the one. I know how much we love each other and I wouldn’t my son to go without the chance to have his own bestie sib like me.

That said, Aunts get no love in this day and age. In fact, yesterday was the official Aunt holiday. And if you’re list most people, you probably didn’t even know the day existed. Fortunately, a few companies are beginning to extoll the virtue of aunts with cute clothing lines.

As the original Savvy Auntie, Melanie Notkin started a biz to celebrate her role as an aunt. Fortunately, her good sense extends beyond sheer branding genius. She’s also got amazing style, seeing that she partnered with one of my favorite designers Shirin NYC to create the Auntie and Me Collection that allows Aunts to flaunt their mini nieces and nephews in hot pink style.

My most precious Auntie moment came just a few months ago. I’m known as Auntie to the two children of dear friends of mine. They are 9 & 5. In February, their mom passed away, after a 4 1/2 year battle with cancer. That day, I flew to Texas & went straight to their house. Add, who is 5i had been at lunch with some friends & had fallen asleep in the car. She woke up in a house full of people, saw me, & came running. We cuddled on the couch for the next hour, talking about her day & her mommy. I wouldn’t trade that moment for anything in the world.

I believe that my favorite Aunt moment was have my 2 1/2 yr old neice tell me that she needed those shoes. When I asked why she simply said “Because I am beautiful” I loved it just for her to officially know that. No matter what others think I always want her to know that her Auntie knows she is beautiful inside and out!!!

My favorite Aunt moment started off on a sad note. I was very close to my maternal grandmother. She did so many cute things to make each grandchild feel special. Since her passing, my Aunt (her sister), has made sure each tradition continues. Auntie Sheila has made sure that each of my girls have the special traditions of our family passed down to them. She has taken them on trips and spoiled them silly! She has kept so many traditions and memories alive for our family! She gave my girls a book to remember their trip to Chicago. Now, any time my girls read it, the oldest says “Oh, ‘Cago. Where Shei-ya lives.” I love how much she has given them and they remember her sweet Auntie spirit!

My favourite Auntie Moment is when my niece Serena (at age 3) said why I am I an auntie, not a mommy? because I would be a great mommy! I explained to her that I was a mommy to her big cousin and she said “you live with Joel and play with him too.” I said yes. Being able to have only one child I take my Auntie duties very seriously and I loved that she appreciated me…

My sister calls all of her 2 nieces and 3 nephews her painless children. She is always there at soccer games, recitals, birthdays, gosh, you name she is there! She has a special bond with each on of her “painless children”, and they all love her very much. I can’t say thank you enough for all Auntie Kiara has done for my 3 little ones and my niece and nephew.

When my nephew turned four I began taking him on special adventures, just the two of us. One day we went on a train, ferry and bus because he loves transportation. At the ferry wharf was a teacup ride and because I am his auntie I can say yes to treats. We had such fun making each other laugh on the ride, really sharing a fun connection. At the end he said “silly us” and a great memory was made.

My favorite aunt moment was when I asked my husband’s niece to be my flower girl! She was so thrilled!
