I still remember those old classic lunch boxes. When I first immigrated to the United States at age seven, I was dazzled by all the fun cartoon containers with their bright colors and the promise of the All-American baloney sandwich inside. Sadly, when we first immigrated to the states, my parents couldn’t afford a new one, so I somehow ended up with a Planet of the Apes hand-me-down box. And while most girls my age would be horrified with this scenario, preferring some sort of Princess or Mickey Mouse motif, I was secretly thrilled at my initiation into the ranks of real-life American kids.

These days, I’ve gotten a bit pickier. Let’s just say I wouldn’t be caught dead lugging around giant apes on anything. So it’s fair to say I’m just as picky for my son. Fortunately, SoYoung Mother has created a line of amazingly chic and understated cooler and lunch bags that even I would be proud to carry.

Created by a Toronto Mom, the cooler and lunch bags are completely safe (PVC-phthalate- and lead-free) and feature a cute, retro design of spaceships, giraffe, motorcycle or birds.

Just in time for summer, the cooler bags can be worn messenger style, which ups the cool quotient considerably, while the lunch bags can be attached to a stroller or worn as a backpack. And did I mention the laminated linen fabric? That’s right, this bag will come back home as good as it left with a quick wipe down.

Now this won’t guarantee your kids won’t beg for some garish equivalent of the Planet of the Apes lunch box as they get older, but at least you can expose them to the basics of good style while they’re still young and impressionable.

I adore the butterfly lunch bag. My daughter is starting kindergarten and because of her allergies she has to bring her own snack everyday! This would be a perfect and special bag that she could feel proud to wear to school! It would be awesome to have something “special” for her “special” food that would last and she could show off to all the other kindergarteners so she would feel proud of her snacks!~
