Outside (and all around) the box

Screen shot 2010 06 07 at 9.52.39 PM Outside (and all around) the boxI’m much more about the good thing than the new thing: I was reminded of this particularly good thing at a friends house this weekend. Designed by Enzo Mari in 1967, Il Posto dei Giochi is a three-metre long piece of corrugated cardboard folded into ten panels that transforms into instant flexible play space. Equal parts simple, graphic and clever (with a series dose of sixties cool), it’s a just-add-imagination play zone that can go-anywhere (and looks good anywhere too). It takes playing with a cardboard box to another level. While my kids are a little on the large side for something like this, I can absolutely see myself sneaking behind it for some (quiet) time out (shhh, but I could hide a lot of mess behind it too).

They’ve been really tough to find since the second edition was released in late 2008, but I’ve tracked them down at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago store (ps: how much do we love a gallery store??). Related: I’ve always thought this was a pretty great cardboard box project (I wouldn’t keep the kids in it, but they could certainly manage making it).
