Red Snapper Onesies (For Dressing in the Dark)
Flora June Blair was born May 7th. She is just 3 weeks old and as I write this she is being loved on by her brothers and sisters: Ralph, Maude, Olive, Oscar and Betty. As you can imagine, June and I have been spending lots of quality time together in the wee hours of the night. Feedings. Diaper changes. More feedings. More diaper changes.
Since all of this happens in dim lighting (remember, it’s the middle of the night), it’s not uncommon to discover, when morning light dawns, that June’s clothing has been improperly snapped. June is my 6th(!) baby. So I can’t say this really surprises me. I have been dealing with the reality of mis-snapped onesies and un-aligned playsuits since I was 23. It’s just part of the parenting package, right?
Wrong. (Click Read More to find the fix.)
Let’s be honest, it’s not a big deal. Really. Badly snapped onesies are a minor irritation in my day. But when I saw these brilliant Red Snapper Onesies, and realized that someone out there had solved the snap-alignment-problem in a simple, elegant way, it was like parents had just achieved our own little moon-landing.
Plus, as a designer, I can’t help but appreciate the visual element the red snap adds. It’s very cool looking, no? The whole concept reinforces what I learned as a design student: design is problem solving.
Apparently, I have been so busy snapping and unsnapping onesies over the the last 12 years, it has never occurred to me the mis-snapping dilemma could be solved. Thank goodness for clever-er minds than mine. Onward and upward, parents!
What about you? Do you ever mis-snap your baby’s clothing? Do you like the look of the red snap? Have you ever had an idea that would solve the mis-snapping dilemma?
Update: buy any 2 Red Snapper shirts and you’ll get the priceless onesie for free! When you place your order, email Red Snapper with the subject line PRICELESS FREE, tell them the size and they will send it you. Fun!

maythi commented on Jun 02 10 at 11:27 amDoes the red snap glow in the dark? I’m a little confused. Does it simply mean the red is the middle snap? I tried to go on their site for an explanation. Love the idea though, i have definitely mis-snapped my share of onesies!!
Elena commented on Jun 02 10 at 12:39 pmI always only do the middle snap and it does hold well!

Yes, the red snap indicates the center — when you get that red snap done correctly, it’s much easier to do all the snaps correctly. I should have explained better. Or changed the title to “how to dress your baby when you’re sleep deprived”. : )
Kelley commented on Jun 04 10 at 4:43 pmI’ve never this problem with the onesie like this, but oh the wonky results i’ve had with some of the full body suit pajamas that snap all up the legs. If they could start color coding those, that’d be wonderful.
