Lose Weight and Keep it Off — With Dessert for Breakfast?

When I was a kid, my mom made me a slightly unusual type of breakfast. It almost always consisted of eggs, and a sweet treat. The sweet treat could be a doughnut, a cinnamon roll, a piece of pound cake or coffee cake, and sometimes even something as decadent as leftover birthday cake. I could always have whatever type of sweet I wanted in the morning (so long as I ate a protein packed egg with it, or a bowl of hearty oatmeal). I just couldn’t have sweets later in the day, especially not before bed. My father even proved his point one specific time, and let me eat a whole layer cake, a piece every night before bed, and I gained 5 lbs by the time the cake was gone.
Throughout my whole youth, I was very slim, but I have always attributed it to just dumb luck, good genes, or maybe a fast metabolism. Well, according to some recent research, it seems my mom may have have actually know what she was talking about, go figure. Researchers from Tel Aviv University have found “that dessert, as part of a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that also includes proteins and carbohydrates, can help dieters to lose more weight — and keep it off in the long run.”
Indulging our cravings in the morning so our metabolisms can work off the calories through the day is the best thing to do say Professor Daniela Jakubowicz, Dr. Julio Wainstein and Dr. Mona Boaz of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine and the Diabetes Unit at Wolfson Medical Center, and Professor Oren Froy of Hebrew University Jerusalem.
The professors say that depriving ourselves of sweets all day just leads to making our addiction to sugar even greater. They believe indulging our sweet tooth first thing in the morning, as part of a balanced 600 calorie meal, can help us keep weight off in the long run. In fact, in a recent 32 week-long study, participants who ate a breakfast that included dessert on average lost 40 lbs more than those participants who didn’t treat themselves to dessert at breakfast.
So all this new research has got me thinking I should go back to eating dessert every morning with my scrambled eggs. My head has been spinning all afternoon with the sweet treats that I want to indulge in now every morning.
