Cheerio Bread Luscious Dulce de Leche Apple Bread Made with Real Apples

The other day I received a sample of the new Dulce de Leche Cheerios in the mail. I have to admit, I was pretty skeptical since I generally don’t eat sugar cereals. We are big fans of regular Cheerios in this house, but I never buy the flavored kind. That said, I am a huge fan of all things Dulce de Leche flavored so I was interested to give them a try. As the box suggested, the cereal had a try sweet, caramel flavor that tasted just like Dulce de Leche. My daughter was not totally won over so I decided to use the rest in a great baking recipe. We are always looking for new snack bread recipes and Dulce de Leche Apple Bread looked absolutely awesome. I loved the idea of adding lots of fresh apples and some cool crushed Cheerios for flavor. If you don’t have the new Cheerios flavor you can easily use the regular kind to make regular apple bread! This was a huge hit in our house, we’ll be making it again soon.

Dulce de Leche Apple Bread

adapted from Betty Crocker

2 1/2 cups Dulce de Leche Cheerios® cereal

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 cup buttermilk

1 egg

2 cups chopped peeled cooking apples (2 medium)

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter and flour the bottom and sides of a 9×5 pan,

2. Place 2 cups of the cereal in food processor and puree into crumbs. Pour into a medium size bowl and stir in the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Set aside.

3. In an electric mixer, beat the sugar and oil. Beat in the buttermilk and egg until just blended. Stir in the apples. Stir in the crushed Cheerio mixture until well-blended. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and top with the remaining ½ cup Cheerioes.

4. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes, then remove from the loaf pan and allow to cool completely.
