Christmas granola 1 1024x711 Gifts From the Kitchen: Homemade Holiday Granola

With the warm, heady spices of the holiday season, homemade granola is easy to stir together and bake in large batches, then package in decorative bags, boxes or jars to deliver to teachers, coaches and friends you’d like to share a little joy with. Granola keeps well too, so there’s no need to worry about it going stale or needing to be refrigerated. Start with old-fashioned oats and add whatever combination of nuts, seeds and dried fruit you like. Here’s to a healthy, happy holiday!

adapted from Martha Stewart

Ingredients
5 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1 cup walnut halves, pecans or sliced or slivered chopped almonds
1 Tbsp. sesame seeds
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. freshly grated nutmeg
pinch allspice
3/4 cup honey
1/4 cup butter
1/2-1 cup golden raisins, sliced apricots, dried cranberries, or a combination

Directions
Preheat oven to 300F. Line a baking sheet with parchment.

In a large bowl, toss together oats, sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts or pecans, sesame seeds, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Set aside.

In a small saucepan, heat the honey and butter until the butter melts; pour over oat mixture. Stir well. Spread onto sheets. Bake until golden, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Break up granola; sprinkle with raisins or other dried fruit. Store in an airtight container.
